This guy's track times don't align with his xc times. What's up.
He is a distance baller to say the least. 2:02, 4:23, and 9:14 show he is fairly distance oriented. Especially since that was after taking 11th at FLN.
Those are the PRs of a mere mortal. His Mt. Sac time suggests he can run 4:05/8:40 or even faster.

He ran 14:28 for 5000 as a sophomore. He'll run 8:40 before he graduates...
I understand the course is slightly easier than in prior years, but 14:10 at Mt. SAC is ridiculous. Kid is a jr from Flagstaff. Anyone know anything about his background/training?
A long time ago I was a freshman in high school and saw this guy named Jeff Nelson run in the Sweeps at Mt SAC.....back in the days where school size didn't matter and the Sweeps was really the Sweeps. Nelson ran away from Paul Medvin and guys from Eugene South all while laughing as he easily strode away from them. Back then, Mt SAC was not at all manicured the way it was in the last 20-25 years as one had to really watch for rocks and uneven terrain. What I saw on video yesterday reminded me much of that. 14:10 is ridiculous and with Mt SAC Invite being so close to CIF and a lot of coaches not wanting to have their runners run the course three times in 5 weeks, I just don't know if that record will be touched for quite a while. Just spectacular....that next Spring Nelson (1979) ran 8:36 for 2 miles being the first high schooler under 8:40. Let's see what this kid does.

Where are all the Southwest is underrated speed rating people? Horton with a 199, Spencer with a 201, Van Meerten with a 201. I don't recall seeing many 200+speed ratings in recent years...

Two of these were run in California. The point is that Southwest runners typically need to travel out of state to get higher speed ratings. California tends to provide a bump, though not as much as the Northeast.

Colorado races are absolutely underrated which actually make's Horton's 199 that much more impressive. Hopefully he can keep it up and continue to run this well later this season so that it's evident to everyone else. Spencer and Van Meerten had to go to California to get the 200+ speed ratings.
This article from the local Flagstaff paper from his freshman year, his coach at the time referred to him as a "14 or 15 year old," suggesting he is 16 or 17 now.
Also, the article mentions how he just did xc to stay in shape for basketball in middle school. When he realized he had some real talent, he gave up most of his sophomore year due to transfer rules in AZ, when he went from the very small charter school NPA to Flagstaff HS. So he didn't have many results last XC season due to that other than running unattached in the NAU George Kyte race (not too far back from some of the NAU top 7 at nationals) and his 3rd place a Footlocker west regional and 11th place at Footlocker championships.

This just goes to show the strength of the SW region. Last year he was 10th at NXR SW in 14:46 and then 11th at Footlocker. All 10 golden tickets should go to the SW.
