"threshold" pace is generally not much faster than race pace. No matter how fast you run marathons, you'll be nowhere near hitting a threshold, other than going too far and getting tired.
Me thinks the 56:16 20k and 2:04:43 marathon records prove that what he is doing is working just fine. And the 27:25 10k at Beach to Beacon.
Now, maybe he changes it up a bit trying to sharpen for the US XC trials and worlds or if he’s trying to go sub-27:00 on the track. But, otherwise, why change what’s working?
Dumb comment. Should he run barefoot on a dirt road too?
Not sure - did Khannouchi run barefoot and on a dirt road? I’ve got a pair of perfectly good flats that mantz can borrow.
Ouch! Look at all those downvotes. Come to think of it, I don’t think Rodgers ran barefoot or on a dirt road as well. Or Rupp, or Hall, or Meb, or Ritzenhein, or Abdi, or Frank, or…
It’s almost as if no one on the list had to run barefoot on a dirt road. Oh, except one guy in the 60s and not because he had to but, rather chose to. But such is the argument of the bouncy-shoe crowd.

I don’t think it takes incredible logical reasoning skills to deduce that the point being made is that these runners, like Khannouchi, had material advantages runners of previous generations did not.
Were Khannouchi’s shoes no better than those work by Johnny Hayes? If not, is Hayes not owed the same “bouncy shoes” whining that you espouse?

Bruh, Khannouchi isn’t the AR holder because he had better footwear than some guy from 1906. Khannouchi is the AR holder because he is the AR holder. It’s not like he finished Chicago and people were like “yeah, but did you see his shoes!? Man, if Johnny Hayes had those shoes, bruh, he’d for sure have the AR.” Not a single person thought any runner from the past would have beat Khannouchi that day “If only they had his shoes.” NO ONE. Khannouchi could have shown up in any past race using the same shoes and smoked every American. You really think if connor was in the same race as Khannouchi using the same shoes he would have beat him!? This is the difference.
connor is literally the AR holder because of shoes. I would bet he wouldn’t even make the top 10 without them. But keep living in bouncy-shoe fantasy land.

This. We never had this discussion before the supershoes. Nobody ever said "I wonder if Shorter had run as fast as KK if he had the same shoes".
You get the most bang for your buck from continuous running at threshold - ie a tempo run. Other methods like Norwegian double threshold and threshold reps are designed to minimize the chance of injury. Someone at Mantz's level may not be particularly injury prone or susceptible to overtraining.
I find comments like this very strange. If intervals and double threshold were designed to reduce injury and allow a runner to fit more "quality" volume in during the week, why wouldn't everyone do them?
Even if someone is less susceptible to injury, or has a great recovery plan, surely breaking a 16k tempo session into smaller chunks would be he best option? Yes you might lose 2 or 3% of the desired "stimulus" but you're substantially reducing fatigue and the chances of injury.
Still waiting for mantz to run a race w/o bouncy shoes. Am I asking too much? Probably so. Hard to throw a 3:00+ head start out the door.
I don't know how long you've been racing but google New Balance Tracksters. Those were my first running shoes.
The difference between those and the racing shoes of the mid- 1980's is absolutely incredible. I used to wish I had them when I started out in 7th grade.
Running shoes evolve and the latest evolution happens to be noticeably better.
What I'd like to see is an extensive study done with data going back to the first super shoes and look at runners of all abilities to see how much they improved.
At the age of 64 I improved by 30 seconds in a (relatively slow) 5K in a span of two weeks- one race without then one with.
I also notice faster paces in training runs with nylon plated.
You can't detract from the performances of current athletes for taking advantage of the technology offered.
