It was a marketing failure for sponsorship. He found out there are so many juiced guys in lifting/hyrox/whatever they those big guys who lift and do stunts arena. He was one in a million in running. Stick with what you excel at.
Right, he’s overweight by almost 20% of his racing weight.
Look at it a different way, a year ago Hall would have been around 250 pounds with all that muscle he was carrying. Now at 167 pounds, he is down right skinny by comparison
NO WAY he was 250 lbs (more like 200lbs as his legs were not that big)
I was shocked to see Ryan Hall looking like a skinny marathoner again when the last time I saw photos of him, he was super muscular from his bodybuilding.
Here is Ryan Hall from April 20, 2024 with pecs and arms bigger than a bear, and with all that muscle would have had trouble running:
And now here is Ryan Hall recently on Oct 1, 2025 looking like a skinny marathoner again and actually running instead of lifting dumbbells and weights for his videos. His Instagram post says he now weighs 167 pounds and talking about "loving the lightness (just 35 grams)" of his Suunto watch. No muscle obsessed bodybuilder would praise how light a running watch is:

Whatever he was doing to produce that type of muscle mass makes me question his IQ and overall intelligence. I can tell you what he was doing was for sure quickening the road to meet God. What he said as doing was making him look muscular but also dropping his longevity by about 40 years!
Hall was obviously doping during his bodybuilding days. He would not have passed drug tests. He was taking at least 3x the legal amount of testosterone.
Wow!..."3x the legal amount of testosterone?" 😯 Are you sure? It seems like he would have a ton of side-effects, like hair loss, acne, roid rage, etc, with that high amount?
Was he geared up in the 2024 pic where he looks like a monster? 🤔
Nah, he just ate some extra chicken at dinner and made sure he was doing at least one pull day and one push day a week and within 4-5 weeks he was a professional wrestler

I think he finally looks normal post-retirement and am happy that he seems to have found a love for running again. He has publicly said many times that he was too light during some of his pro career because he was trying to "look like the Africans" and had low testosterone. Then of course he went crazy with the body building and stopped running entirely. Now it looks like he's found a healthy medium though he is running some pretty crazy long stuff in the mountains, just another facet of his wackiness I guess.
Ryan Hall goes all-in on whatever he is doing. He is extremely driven and focused on what he is trying to achieve. This naturally leads to some extremes that most people would never experience, but it is also how you achieve great things that most people would never experience. I am very different in that I enjoy being a jack of all trades, but I am the same in that I try to be great at that (be very good at a lot of things, which is a lot of work). But I do appreciate Hall's focus and drive. I wish more people were like him, and I hate to see lazy people criticize him for it
If that was all-in on lifting then he actually was extremely weak for how hard he was training.

Dude has a degree from Stanford so I would thought that he is at least super smart.

Not 40 yrs. But roids do increase risk of a lot of things. Arnold is super fit at almost 80. But he also had multiple heart surgeries at a young age. A lot of the "smart" roids guys try to adhere to schedules and tapers to protect the HYP/PIT axis and there is some science to that.
Hall always struck me as not a skinny guy who ran but a normal to muscular guy who ran himself skinny. Reducing mileage by 100MPW + some roid cycles + legendary work ethic and some genes is powerful.
