Matt was a decent high school distance runner. If he sticks to his 5:15 pace to 20 miles, he'd have a good chance of a significant negative split. First timers are smart to consider 20 miles the halfway mark.
Assume there's some value in him running sub-2:16 & making it to the Trials start line. Sponsors/appearances/etc., leading into the race. I think a controlled 2:15 is in the cards for someone with his talent.
For a 1500m Olympic Gold Medalist there is value in running in the OT marathon? Why would a sponsor be willing to pay a non-competitive runner that won’t appear on the TV screen?
Exactly. He should be in the wheelchair race since they've been getting the most coverage during stateside races. Does nike make a wheelchair?
Not that he is taking it uber serious but I wish he would have extended his career by running the 5 and maybe even 10 before jumping straight to the marathon. I think he was capable of low 12:50s and with his kick he would be lethal in a tactical race.
This seems completely unfair. We always talk tough about how the mile is such short event with a big influence of speed. How are these milers so dam good at the marathon seemingly from day 1? I mean i know they are great runners and will be better then most but I mean how are the Hassans and low 3:30s 15 guys like Kipchoge and Rupp able to do both so seamlessly? 5/10 K elites I can see a bit more. People who can win worlds at the 1500 and run sub 2:10 "42000" is crazy stuff.
Speaking of Hassan, what would be the male equivalent for her times from 800 to marathon? Something like 1:44 and 2:03? And to medal in the 1500 and 10000m at the same games? 3:29 and 26:59? And to be in that shape within the span of a year or two? Perhaps only Bekele could do likewise but not even he would do it in the same year or?
Speaking of disabled participants, the following is from MC's wiki page, the choice of the particular comparison made in describing his 2016 win seems rather odd.
" The race was tactical and the pace slow at the start; the first four finalists in the T13 1500m men's final at the 2016 Summer Paralympics all finished faster than Centrowitz."
Of all the possible ways to describe a slow race, why would anyone bother doing in in this particular manner unless they had a deep seated need to diminish the achievement of winning at the Olympics? It reads like something one of his competitors who did not make the team would want to point out.
If you do not care for the word “like” being repeatedly said in every sentence sometimes multiple times within the same sentence, then definitely turn the audio off to this video.

Winning the outdoor track national championship in the 2 mile with a negative split 8:41 (pre shoe tech) is decent? I suppose.

Wow! Thanks for putting in the work to put it into such a perspective. Appreciated.

When is he going to jump straight into the marathon? Tomorrow is going to be a fun run for him and he probably won’t break 2:20.
“Talent” doesn’t translate to the marathon if you don’t have the base to run 26.2 miles. Centro never ran anything longer than 5K during his prime, so there’s a lot of questions regarding his potential in the marathon at age 35.

Running a fast marathon is more than just having a good base. If Centro had the natural ability needed to be an elite marathoner, he would have been much faster in NCAA XC.
