A lot of inexperienced commentary here will disagree with this but...The fact of the matter with the All-American highschooler is that they have overtrained physically, mentally and emotionally to get that D1 offer and have peaked, suffered multiple overuse injuries or other health complications and can't recover. Jumping into an environment where you are a dime a dozen just doesn't pan out on LRC for most of the hs fantasy here. Reality is that a sub 4 18 yo isn't going to be able to compete at a high level consistently with your average 23 yo foriegn athlete who did the same or better when they were 18. It takes time to get kids ready. Look at Oregons men top finisher from a Eugene hs yesterday. Did he have the same expectations on him his freshman year. I can think of at least 5 Oregon kids over the last 3 years that will probably or continue to take the path of the Birnbaums of the world until they are ready. That's if they aren't broken to pieces first. If you aren't training, you aren't getting better. Kinda hard to do when you come in overtrained and injured or on the edge of injury. Many college coaches are looking for that undertrained kid that is talented but not broken. However with NIL and limited rosters these days, Im not sure what the answer is for continuing to develop the American hs graduate.
