The fact that people live in public housing for decades shows that allocating housing based on private markets is an utter failure. Capitalists are given the privilege of the opportunity to earn money without expending any actual labor based on the premise that they will invest in markets that will provide people with the goods and services to meet their needs. In the housing markets, this has completely failed. There is tremendous demand in just about every housing market in the United States for affordable housing. And in just about every community in the US there is a neighborhood like the Bronx where the housing is old, substandard and poorly maintained. If markets really worked, investors would swoop in, buy up the old dilapidated buildings and build new, clean energy efficient and affordable apartments. Those apartments would be 100% pre-leased during construction because demand is so high. But developers never ever build anything like that because those projects are not as profitable as luxury/high end projects. So, all that is left for low income consumers to rent is either dilapidated unsafe private apartments or, if they are lucky, public housing that is marginally better maintained.

the fundamental fib you are pushing here is if everyone tried hard no one is left making minimum wage flipping burgers. that is not how the world works. you justify it as a competition. well, your competition will by definition have losers. if those losers make $7.25 an hour, the choices are subsidize housing or live in a tent. and if they live in a tent you want the tent city smashed.

As a paraplegic for 4 decades, i dont currently have any limbs and have not had any for 40 years. which makes it dificult to perform any kind of work. There is currently little hope of a miraculous scientific breakthrough or of my limbs growing back on their own since I am not a starfish. So I expect to remain jobless for the foreseeable future.

A better question: why do we have billionaires who pay less in taxes than people who make 50k a year? What's wrong with our society that we worship the obscenely wealthy and give them every break in the book while those of us in the trenches get constantly screwed?
It requires a $138,570 salary for a single person to afford a "comfortable" lifestyle in New York City, meaning 50% of salary on housing, food, and transportation, 30% on entertainment/hobbies, and 20% on debt, savings, and investment. Even if you slash that in half to $69k, you are going to be spending at least $24k on rent alone, and take home pay would only be about $55k, so you'd only have about $31k left for food, transportation, utilities, and anything else. It's expensive and the majority of jobs don't pay enough to get out of public housing in New York.

The problem here is that we have dorky white conservatives who are going to tell black people or all minorities how to live. They don't give F@ck about your racist ass. you can hide like a coward in your scared little world but they are not going to change because some racist dork complains about everything they do.
