Poor work ethic, and clear lack of personal responsibility and accountability on one side. Excuses, excuses. Weak, cult-of-personality coaches, on the other. And all that coupled with "belief" based training over verifiable science, and the unethical Salazarian legacy of looking for shortcuts and cheats rather than honest effort. Then the American T&F ethos: hurt, haze and humiliate young athletes, especially women, with public weight shaming and unhealthy diets. American athletics remains willfully in the stone age. Take US swimming as an example of what to do: none of this crap is accepted, and the team is replete with world record holders and Olympic medalists--consistently the best in the world by far, year after year. Bob Bowman or Anthony Nesty could get an American on distance podiums before any of the so-called expert coaches who get paid the big bucks to make the US look like the little league.
