Are there any 800 or 1500 runners who could beat the women's 200m world record? I doubt it.
But there are certainly quite a few who can beat the women's 400m world record. And quite a few who can't, too. It would be interesting to make a chicked list.
coe and ovett certainly could.
with the roids ped package the gals are on, easily exceeded.

it is a farce.
It's not so simple, these guys aren't sprinters. 21 low 200 isn't easy, it's knocking on the door of elite short sprinter level.
Remember a few years ago when Nick Symmonds went on his quest for a sub 12 FAT 100? And eventually succeeded, just barely. He may have been retired, but wasn't very old yet and trained for it seriously.
He wouldn't have gone on that quest if he had ever been in much better shape than that. It's 23 or 24 200m shape. So I don't know that Symmonds could ever have run even a 22s 200m out of blocks, let alone a 21. You have to run sub 11 100m to be capable of 21 low.

There are absolutely men’s 800m athletes capable of 21-low in an all-out 200m. I honestly wouldn’t be surprised if Lutkenhaus could do that right now, and he’s not even the most obvious candidate.
Harald Schmid ran 1:44.83 and 20.68 FAT
Korirr 44.21 and 1:42.05. Split 43.3 at west regionals one year. Gotta have great wheels to do that.
More recently Will Sumner ran 21.4 indoors his senior year and definitely could have gone 20.9 outdoors had he run it
Theres a video somewhere on facebook of Cas Loxsom running 20.9 in a workout with Brooks Beasts.
But you asked if there was anyone who could? The answer is yes. What's this nonsense about Symmonds? His 400m PR is like 47 something. He's anything but the 800m runner you would think of for his 200m speed.
"Three weeks ago, Kerr ran his fastest 200m rep ever in a workout — 22.4 at the end of a speed session Mackey used to use with Nick Symmonds (150-300-150-200-150-200). Mackey was pleased, because with how fast the top guys have been closing this year, he knows Kerr will need a good top gear in Tokyo."
Wow!
LRC Note: Please link to the article you are talking about. Here it is.
That's cool, so we've got Hocker running a 400m @ 49s, and Kerr running a 200m @ 22s. Next we will hear about Laros running a 100m @ 11s.
Maybe this is finally the year to make it a fast pace to nullify the kickers.
I'd be astonished if Laros couldn't run 11.xx with a flying start.
We used to do 150s with an all out timed 100m and I could get under 12.xx and I was 1:57.5 800m runner.
Laros could go 10.9x flying
I've worked with a bunch of low 50 / mid 1:5x guys who could all go around 10.9x very high flying. For distance runners a flying 100 will cut a second or so off their 100. Flying 10.9 for them is only 11.9 or so in the 100.
Who are you folks cheering for in the men's 1500m? I would say Jakob, but that seems unlikely. It was a surprise to myself that I find myself hoping for Kerr to take it. Damn good runner from the 800 to the 3k.

I also said we should make a list of coulds and couldn'ts. Separate the wheat from the chaff. The sheep from the GOATs.

Lydiard wouldn’t let his guys train for 800m if they couldn’t break 22 for 200m.
I'm not sure that is correct - unless you are referring to a flying start. Snell's best from a stationary start was 22.3. That would probably be 21-high with a flying start.

I don't know about today but back in the '50s Tom Courtenay ('56 Olympic champion) ran 21 and in the early '60s so did George Kerr (bronze in Rome).
