Why is /radvanced running so ridiculous?

1. Because it is still Reddit, so all the same dumb nanny rules apply. Jokes, quips, or any opinion to the right of Hillary Clinton gets you insta-banned

2. It is mostly just advanced hobby-joggers. They consider themselves "advanced" because they run a 3 hour marathon instead of a 4 hour one like the regular running subreddit.

Despite all of this sites problems and quirks, I think most of us keep coming back here because it is basically the only group of people on the internet who "get it" in terms of high level running. The discussions here feel like those I have with with my college teammates on runs, I'm sure others can relate. You're not gonna find any serious advice on how to improve your 5k from 14:20 to 14:00 anywhere else on the internet, or find any other group as black pilled on doping, for example.

I was also there when the site got taken over, but context was different than indicated here. The founder/chief moderator wanted to monetize it and make it a place to promote his business ventures (race promotion/management, merch, coaching) and the masses rebelled. It emptied out for a year or two, and became something of a letsrun lite (lotta bros talking bro talk), but somehow the secondary mods were able to wrest control back to the masses. The masses did come back, but there was a different flavor, and a lot of the newbs or joggers came over to advanced runner from r/running and that's about where things stand to day. You get a lot of questions about Pfitz and JD training (omg, missed the 3rd workout on the 7th week of my training block, am I screwed?), and 2:50s marathoners telling you the nuance of double threshold and single threshold.

Whenever I have posted there, my post has always gotten deleted by the nazi mods. Either they think the discussion I am initiating is "too simple" and fits better at r/running, which is funny because the mods are just assuming that their view on the subject ia the only correct, just like real nazis and fachists, or they think it isnt interesting enough for other runners.

This is outdated info. The original mods of r/ar have had it back for a couple of years now after spending a few years at r/artc instead. The guy who tried to start a business called Advanced Running is not around anymore.

I don’t have any issue with the modding there, and I’ve met a couple of them irl. The users are another story. There’s very little discussion of the things that will actually make you faster (like organizing a 100mpw training schedule around a full time job), and a lot of discussion that basically boils down to r/fitness topics for people who are getting into running. And of course there’s just a general tendency on Reddit for everyone to want to say “well actually…” to every comment.

I don't understand the fawning over women runners. Not that they're unattractive, but it would never occur to me to make a list. I guess I just hate lists.

I'd still say there are some decent training / physiology threads every now and then, usually around the topic of threshold stuff with good contributions from the more experienced fast post collegiate guys on there.

Have to agree overall for sure, and yet it's arguably even worse on the /r/RunningShoeGeeks sub though. 90% of the people there are convinced if you do easy runs at 8 minute pace or faster you're a superhuman.

You'll see posts like "oh yeah this shoe is great for easy runs, intervals and speedwork" then you see their definition of 'speedwork' is 7 min miles, like ok...

Man, there is seriously so much to be said for old school, non overly moderated internet (social media and forums).

I’m not gonna lie, I miss the ability to openly troll and sh** talk with reckless abandon, removing the ability to say literally any bad words has just made every internet space so lame.

I’ve essentially just removed myself from the internet, because it’s just incredibly lame to argue with anyone using only #approvedlanguage, and I come up with something that’s actually worth saying so sparingly.

It’s good in the sense that I don’t waste my time arguing with nobodies about pointless stuff, but also kind of isolating and depressing because of how tech/internet centric our society has become…makes me sick to my stomach

Say what you will about that place, but it used to actually be active. The mods butchered that place.

Advancedrunning is insufferable.

I was permabanned from r/advancedrunning because I posted that the Boston Marathon coverage should focus on the elite runners and not the people in wheelchairs.

They banned me for being an 'ableist'. lol

I was permanently banned from Reddit for racism.
