I never trained at an elite level, so maybe one of you can help me explain what his workout might be tailored towards? I guess it could be a lot (especially with no times and rest included), but maybe it hints more towards only 5k, or could the shorter reps be a sign that he is prepping for something faster?

Cutdown, likely hitting a range of paces
I'd guess the 2k and 1600 were about 8k-5k pace, 1200-800 at 3k or so, and the 400-200 progressing from mile to 800. Hit a wide range of paces and get accustomed to shifting gears
