Kishane Thompson pulls out of rest of Diamond League with "shin discomfort". a) Do you believe him? b) Is Lyles Worlds favorite?

Kishane has had shin issues going back a long time. It wasn't really solved until late 2023. He also doesn't seem like he's been 100% healthy this year so I believe him.

Lyles is the favorite for worlds. He hasn't run fast this year yet but that doesn't matter when you've run fast before and are beating people who are running fast now. He always puts it together when it counts and I don't see why this year would be any different.

I said this last year before he won his Olympic gold but I feel that mentally he is just on a different level from everyone else in the world. Everyone walked into that Paris final last year thinking they would win, but Lyles walked in thinking it was impossible for him to loose.

That’s why I will never take this corny showboater seriously. If he was truly great he would be working on his craft endlessly. There is no excuse to start so poorly, race after race, year after year. He is more concerned with YouTube and YouTubers and Tyreek Hill and twitter gossip than being a true pro. The bs that he spouts about the WR. He is not breaking a world record with a pedestrian start. I can’t wait until he is an afterthought like Richardson.

Lol at thinking a 7x World champion is not working on his craft. He went from being an afterthought at 100M to the 2x defending champ in the event. Maybe the other athletes should be working on their "craft" and improving their top-end speed to actually beat him at Worlds

Lyles is a big game competitor and on his way back. In the sprints, if you get tight, you do not run as fast. His fast closes have a way of making his opponents tighten up because they know he is on the move, so they better get a great start. Thompson probably did have an injury issue that made him want to retrench and rest a bit before asking max effort from his body. It's exceedingly rare for major competitors to race four or five times in the month before World's. But right now Lyles is the favorite, in my book. Kung Fu Kenny has a proven record of medaling at world's and I'd love to see him win. I don't worry too much about his result in this last race because he ran 9.79 when it counted at USAs. Lyles can be beaten but Kenny hasn't won solo world or Olympic gold yet, so I can't set him as the favorite just yet.

This just amplifies the “can Thompson go 3 rounds” issue. Lyles will still need to start better than he did at Silesia and Kenny can’t tighten up cuz he’s facing Noah. No coincidence in my mind that Kenny ran so well in the 100 at USA’s without Lyles. Getting run down in the 200 probably messed with his head too.

It’s amazing how many people are discounting KB. He has lost 1 200 and 1 100 all year. He has an extremely busy USA with 6 races and was definitely back into a heavier workload the past week. I expected him to be 3rd. 9.79 people are forgetting. If he can get to 9.75/6, that’s top 10 all time.

9.79/1.8 is about 9.9; if that's your basis for thinking Kenny is in great shape I think you should see if there is additional information to back it up. I would have thought that Kenny's great 200 marks would allow him to be running very well at the end of a 100m.

Instead my take is that Noah is getting better still and that neither KT nor Kenny are showing consistent at the same level. Furthermore, if Noah had not been so far back at 10m he would have won. I no longer think that KT is a strong favorite with Kenny most likely second. I would rate Noah as an equal favorite and Kenny third.

As for others in that race, Noah looked better than expected, no one else did, and several early contenders looked like also rans (Sibine...).

This is not about who I like, I don't find myself liking many of the male sprinters right now.

I think Kishane might be feeling something slight though not enough to stop him if he wanted to compete. Another rematch with Noah after a sloppy last 20m isn't something you want after two races in close proximity. Probably realizes that he needs to iron some things out to not repeat last years mistakes. I'd wait to see how Noah runs at Lausanne before declaring him the favorite but I would call it very close rn. Think I need to see Noah beat Seville by 0.05 to give him the favorite status and Noah doesn't typically blow people out of the waters in the 100.

This. Given his fragile injury history, I would not be surprised if he aggravated something and is trying to avoid escalating. His track record here is not great.

Lyles will get race sharp whether or not Thompson is running. I don’t think that’s it.

I backed Seville to win Worlds and the Olympics. I was wrong. I'm going with him as my favourite to win Worlds in Tokyo.
