The timing is impeccable. Is this a FU to the Paul Allen and His Sister? The Blazers were sold for 4 billion Yesterday.
.....a team he paid 70 million for. Seahawks sale will be next. Dude has (had) some dough. But Phil Knight has some major catching up to do even after this donation. He's donated roughly 1/10th his net worth so far while Paul Allen committed to donating 1/2.
Phil busted his A, every day for that company. Allen rode the gates coattails to a payday. Besides as a local. I would rather have Phil than Allen any day. Allen's crew was a bunch of meddling idiots who found a way to screw up eveything, these are the kind of people who could screw up watching paint dry.
Now he just needs to help out Michael Johnson shore up his finances so he can pay the athletes what was promised
Is there a reason that MJ hasn't approached Nike (Phil Knight) to help, or did he and was rejected? MJ was Nike's "Golden Boy" for a many years, especially during the 1996 Olympic Games. Also, has anyone noticed that there were no shoe company signage/sponsors at any GST meets? (did I miss seeing them?). You'd think MJ and Co. would've approached ALL the shoe companies to have them kick in a few bucks for the meets. You'd think trying to establish a new track league would benefit both shoe companies, athletes, and fans.

Anyone know why?
Because the shoe companies are tired of wasting money trying to make Track into a real professional sport?

MJ said part of the idea of GST was to prove you could do it without the shoe companies, plus there have always been concerns about conflicts of interest where athletes are signed to multiple brands.
That’s an incredible act of generosity, $2B will be transformational for cancer research and care. Phil Knight’s commitment shows how philanthropy can truly change the future of medicine.
I bet we still have cancer, and chemo 25 years from now. He could have just set that money on fire and accomplished the same thing.

Wouldn't say that, but:
$2B will be transformational for cancer research and care.
.... is by no means guaranteed. PK already gave/raised over a billion to OHSU, with not a whole lot to show for it except shiny buildings. OHSU's cardio produced the first artificial heart valve (amongst other things) that has saved far more lives. The problem is that the $ are going to OHSU, which is in Portland, which has already proven a hard sell to A-list researchers.
So, NYC can LOSE Diamond League event like they did in 2016? Or so that GST can't even make it through one complete season before bankruptcy, while owing athletes millions?
I know, let's pretend Franklin Field (with first 3 lanes <400m & obstruction/metal rail between lanes 3/4) is a REAL track. Never mind it doesn't meet WA or USATF standards, and therefore is not certified.
How about sh!tty attendance at Mt Sac meet, no wait, they can't even get an organizing committee that functions,, let alone host a meet. What's that, they want USATF to front all the $ GUARANTEED - something that's not ever been done??!!
So, what's the solution that hasn't happened for the PAST 20 YEARS???!!!!
Phil Knight's net worth is estimated to be around $35.4 billion as of August 2025, according to Bloomberg's Billionaires Index. Estimates vary across sources, ranging from $32.1 billion to $46.6 billion.
Nike shoes are primarily assembled in Vietnam, China, and Indonesia, which account for about 72% of their production.
The average hourly wage for factory workers in Vietnam, including those in footwear assembly, is approximately VND 68,000 (around USD 2.99). For Nike-specific factories, reports suggest wages can range from USD 2 to USD 4 per day, which translates to roughly USD 0.25 to USD 0.50 per hour, assuming an 8-hour workday.
$0.25 per hour to workers so Knight can be worth $40 billion.
He's quite a guy!
if you have a moral issue with this, stop being a tool buying $250 carbon plated running shoes.
Many of these posts are pretty lame. Phil's sister just recently (couple of months ago) passed away after a couple year battle with cancer, so this contribution is a very nice tribute to his sister. To put this $2 billion donation into perspective, this is about 4-5 times more than what the American Cancer Society most recently spent on cancer research!!!
