I think you mean “running”.
I think you mean “running”.
The bottom line is that I am glad more people are getting into running.
Annoying monkey brain thoughts that cross my mind every time I see someone in full bandit apparel:
You don't need a hydration vest to run for an hour or less.
Unless you're making ludicrous money (and you wouldn't be living/running where I live/run if you did) you really don't need to spend $500 on each of your bandit running fits
you also don't need to be wearing alphaflys for your 3 miles at 10:00 pace
for the love of god just put your phone down. and i dont mean like "dont listen to music while you run" or "leave your phone at home and let running be meditative" i mean like don't text and run. stop off to the side and send your text. then start running again. i promise you don't need to save the 15 seconds that will take you. the amount of people I see texting and running at the same time is ridiculous.
I wish most running shoes not-on-clearance still cost about $100. I feel like the guys over in beaverton know that the newer runners will irresponsibly spend $220 on the peg premium just because it has an exposed air pod and the word premium in its name (I originally wrote $180, but googled it just to be sure, and was honestly surprised at how much this shoe cost)
ok rant over

Good time to take up racewalking. It's like running before the running boom
It's like that moment just before running.

I feel like it's a good thing that people are getting out and exercising more, and I am happy to see so many people running in the parks and trails around my city. On the other hand, tons of races have gotten super pricey and hard to get into. The runfluencer culture that has popped up in the past couple years is also very grating.
When did you realize you became the cranky old guy? This is a 'get off my lawn' post if there ever was one.
Gonna be a lot of running going on in Washington DC as the thugs start fleeing law enforcement...About time...
Our sport, perhaps more than any other, is one where you can 100 percent decide for yourself what your participation looks like. Cheap gear can still be found and you can get into a race every weekend. You can completely ignore any trend or fad or whatever, and you skip any event if you feel it's too choked with trendy folks.
Hell yeah, brother!
Yeah races are sold out because they're filled with slow hobbyjoggers.
Parkrun also overcrowded.

just get fast and then shoot the shiz with the the run club ladies who have speed goggles. there has never been a better time to be a runner. hop into races etc., no one really checks

Change is difficult.
Every generation expresses its enthusiasm for running in a slightly different way. When you first started there were likely things older runners did that seemed foolish or antiquated.
Some of it probably was, but not all of it.
As you age in the sport, things change. Not always for the best, but they change and it’s up to you to decide how you will engage with it.
It is certainly not the same as it used to be.
From an entirely selfish perspective, it fuccing rocks. Before running was trendy, I ran a 16 minute 5k, and was therefore slow. Now that everyone and their mother runs, I run a 16 minute 5k and get treated like a god.

You live your life based on what others do. You will not succeed.
I work at a high school and have definitely seen an uptick in interest in kids wanting to run (read: hobby jog) half marathons. It actually seems like it is driven by some influencers on tiktok, which is also where those kids are getting their training plans (yikes.)
Anecdotally it does also seem like there has been a bit of a swell in running/jogging in the general public recently. I recall reading somewhere a while back that the popularity of running tends to increase when the economy is not doing well- running is cheaper than gym memberships. I recall a pretty big uptick in joggers at races back in 2008/2009, which aligns with the great recession.
The runfluencer stuff is kinda dumb but at least running is more popular than it has been - though viewership of pro track in the US is struggling, it seems.

Parkrun is only overcrowded in the uk. Maybe Australia.
definitely not North America. Be the change you want to see… the beauty of parkrun is of some are getting too full you can start a new one (especially in North America!!!)
And they’re free and every week💪🏼
I feel like the running boom was much worse around 2012. And then CrossFit happened. And then Covid. Now people are back into races, but at least around DC there are still fewer races over all.
aYou can’t be like eww fat people and then all ewww runners. Pick a lane.

Huh??
I think it's a good thing. Too many people do nothing, so the more the merrier in my opinion. Plus, influencers need fresh meat to hawk their wares to, otherwise they might need to get a real job. This growth fuels the influencers and their channels, which means we can continue getting letsrun members views on the likes David "love you with sincerity" Roche and Elizabeth "quick, delete the thread" Clor. Our lives would be poorer without these moments.
