Herrera hails from Madera, a Central California city, with an 80% Hispanic population. The high school there has produced, over decades, former NFL greats, and Lee Evans, Olympic 400 champ and record holder from 1968.
I think Herrera's connection to Mexico is through his parents or grandparents.
Then is Manzano's 3:30 the Mexican record?
Manzano was good enough to represent the US, which Herrera, obviously, was not capable of attainment of the same level.
You're right! He's in the running too. Unfortunately, Catrofe isn't entered in the Lausanne 5k.
Let’s also note Luis was in this race and Herrera trounced him. Granted it looked like Luis just went over his skis trying to control the race from 1k out.
Good call! I didn't watch the race nor look at the results. My bad.
Now that I've at least looked at the results, we should also mention the Uruguayan, Valentin Soca, who finished ahead of Grijalva too. Soca just ran 13:02 last week, and he's barely 23, so presumably he still has a lot more room for improvement. Herrera (turning 28 next month) and Catrofe (26) are in their primes now, so they might be closer to their ceilings.
