Hocker just humiliated the #1 and #3 5k runners in the WORLD....by leading the whole race. That's insanely impressive.
He has a legit shot at winning gold in Tokyo in the 5k.
The race totally played into his hands today, even the inside of lane 1 opened up in the last straight. There wasn't a prelim in the 5k either which definitely helped him. We'll see how he fares in Tokyo, but I'd bet on the guys he "humiliated" today to finish ahead of him.
Also lol at him having a serious shot at gold. Even if Jakob doesn't race, Hocker is not the favorite.
Even a 10% chance at a gold medal is a "legit shot" at winning. Doesn't have to mean he's the favorite. He wasn't the favorite in Paris in the 1500 either.
Would you give up a 1% at an Olympic gold? Would you give up a 1% chance at a million dollars?

No, he does not. Almgren, Mills, the other Americans and the Ethiopians will not let the race fall above 13:00. Certainly not much above it. That's without even thinking about how much stronger Jakob is aerobically than Cole.

"humiliate" is a weirdly strong word to choose here. He's faster and outkicked them in a tactical race when they were all on a double. And I suspect that Fisher particularly is tailoring training to optimize his world's performance rather than getting through nationals and hanging on. Great race by Hocker though. Nuguse was like Jakob in the 1500m, and Hocker was like Jakob in the 5000m. Certainly adds some juice to the DL finals and the WCs this year.

The Ethiopians and Americans let it go to 13:13 in Paris.
Ingebrigtsen's aerobic strength is part of the equation. No one wants to be the lead out for Ingebrigtsen to kick in a 12:55 race. And Ingebrigtsen doesn't want to be the lead out for Hocker in a 13:25 race. So it is unclear how anyone is going to play it. But I agree that the odds of the race being slow enough for Hocker to win are quite small, especially since Hocker will be coming out of multiple rounds prior to the 5000 final.
If Hunter does not get WCS, will he give up his spot for Teare?
This thread is exactly why he will absolutely run the 5k at Worlds. Imagine beating the indoor and outdoor record holders in an event in the same race (which you failed to qualify for in the prior year, an Olympic year) with one of those two being the guy who outkicked you despite being the 5k/10k guy vs. you, a miler - imagine all that, and somebody on the internet is thinking to themselves, "will he give up his spot?"

The guy will never medal again in any world major championships. There are 10 or 15 Africans faster than him at 5k that didn't even qualify for these championships. He'll be a lap behind

No, Hocker has no chance in hell of winning the 5k. The pace will not be 13:30.
I mean, Jakob won the Olympic 5,000 in 13:13. The pace was 13:20s pace until the last lap. It could very well be slow again especially if the field has a lot of doubling athletes.

Yeah let's slightly tap the breaks and put into perspective. This was a 13.26 race where it was 8.21 at 3000m. To give some perspective, Paris was 8.17 at 3000m (so comparable) but the finishing time 13.13 with the last two 1000m's going 2.35 and 2.21.0 (for Jakob)
It was a great performance yesterday from Hocker - nobody is disputing that, but it's hard to believe that at the world level off a slow opening 3000m, that next mile would ever be so slow (which is what handed Hocker the race)
Grant Fisher ran the 4 laps from 3000m-4600m in 4.12 yesterday. Back to Paris, the 1600m from 3000-4600m? Almost exactly 10 seconds faster at 4.02. Cole Hocker can't win a race that goes like that (and that's how all these global 5's that dawdle through 3000m go).
This is one of those "if it did, he could do it" situations. The problem is the circumstances aren't ever going to line up like this.

But by the same logic Cole won that in 13.26 which was 13:40s pace until the last lap.
As good as US 5000m running is at the top, "slow" at the US National champs level and "slow" at the World/Olympic level are really two different things.
I outlined it above - yesterday the mile preceding the final lap was 4.12. In Paris it was 4.02. That is a massive difference.

Jakob’s three global titles have been won in 13:09, 13:11, and 13:13. All are considerably slower than Hocker’s PR.
