It's funny to think that the Japanese would want those awful American cars. Noone does.
But what no-one so far has mentioned is Japan investing 550 billion dollars in the US. Holy cow. That is not only a huge victory for trump, but surely an unsustainable drain for Japan.
Trump didn’t say what Japan would be investing in, and the U.S. receiving 90% of the profits makes no sense at all.
As part of the trade deal, Japan says they will invest $550 billion in the US!!! Last year Japan invested $819 billion. Another nothing burger from Trump. If Trump blows his nose, he announces it as the "greatest sneeze in history!" We all know that 90% of what he says every day is lies or disinformation. The rest is delivery orders from fast food restaurants.
I will always give up Tariff points if I can get major countries to OPEN THEIR MARKETS TO THE USA. Another great power of Tariffs. Without them, it would be impossible to get countries to OPEN UP!!! ALWAYS, ZERO TARIFFS TO AMERICA!!!

Japan is in the middle of a demographic collapse. Much like Europe is heading into.
They simply do not have the workers left in Japan. It makes sense for them to build in the US. They avoid the tariffs and they get access to a much much healthier labor market.
We just completed a massive Deal with Japan, perhaps the largest Deal ever made. Japan will invest, at my direction, $550 Billion Dollars into the United States, which will receive 90% of the Profits. This Deal will create Hundreds of Thousands of Jobs — There has never been anything like it. Perhaps most importantly, Japan will open their Country to Trade including Cars and Trucks, Rice and certain other Agricultural Products, and other things. Japan will pay Reciprocal Tariffs to the United States of 15%. This is a very exciting time for the United States of America, and especially for the fact that we will continue to always have a great relationship with the Country of Japan. Thank you for your attention to this matter!
this LITERALLY kills the American auto industry. Holy monkey, it’s like Trump is a Russian plant.
How so? The US versions of the Honda Accord and Toyota Camry are made here. I think the Japanese would like our good cars (Cadillac V Series, Corvette and Mustang). Maybe smaller pickups like the Ford Maverick.
Trump implements tariffs lower than initially threatened, and it's always a TACO? It's called negotiating. When you sell a house, do you list it for the absolute minimum amount for which your willing to dump it? No you list it for $700K, the buyer offers $650K and you negotiate somewhere in between (excluding 2021 where cash offers above asking were the norm).

The US auto industry is paying a 50% tariff on imported copper, steel and aluminum. Tariffs on Japanese Autos will be cut from 27.5% to 15%. Vehicles made in Japan pay no tariffs on copper, steel and aluminum. So, if you want to help the US auto manufacturers, this is not the way to do it. It may end up being cheaper to make vehicles in Japan and avoid the tariffs on raw materials and eat the 15% tariff when exporting to the US.
People in Japan do not buy US vehicles because gas prices in Japan are high. Most people drive small vehicles many of which are not even sold in the US, like the Nissan Note and Toyota Sienta. The top imports in Japan are German vehicles. Oddly, Jeeps are one of the most popular US made vehicles in Japan. But US vehicles are rare as they are generally too big, guzzle too much gas and are seen as being poorly made and unreliable by Japanese people.
And a 15% across the board tariff on Japanese goods is not a victory for US consumers or US manufacturing. It is not enough to cause a shift in manufacturing from Japan to the US or to protect the US from dumping. It will just end up being inflationary as Japanese goods will slowly rise in prices to claw back the losses incurred in reducing prices to keep from having inventory pile up under Trump's tariffs.
It was Reagan that encoded the downward spiral with Japan. As a young man he was an actor in L.A. when L.A. Japanese were the US Army commandos in Europe and had zero desertions, AWOLs, UAs in spite of being 25,000 special forces while their parents and siblings be held with machine guns pointed at thm in prisons all over the US states, a War Crime. No US military unit ever has zero cowards in history to this day. As president he treated Japan as if he was Japanese, swapping US atomic & weapons secrets with the Japanese defence Industries considered treasonous by many critics at the time. Reagan was fooled badly at the Plaza Accord when he supposedly got Japan to buy tons of American goods. Instead as it turns out Japan continued it's imperial ambitions by vectoring investment funds into China, Korea, Taiwan, South East Asia as Japan had promised to do since the 1900s.
If you live in the mid west you know that Japanese car plants are screwdriver plants. The parts are made by Japanese parts makers who moved to the mid west. The robots, assembly libes, forklifts, just in time computers are a;l Made in Japan. The compilcated parts are shipped from Japan. Heat treated axles etc are hand forged by hand picked guys trained in Japan for months. At food processors the canneries, shellers, meat cutters, peelers, conveyor belts, etc. are all Made in Japan. At a Taiwan chip plant, 90% of the semiconductor making machines are Made in Japan, 5% in Netherlands, 5% in America, At Chinese, Korean firms the gear is 100% Made in Japan. No Japanese to my knowledge ever held a samurai sword to anyone's head in the Mid West and made the sign the purchase order. Manufacturer's buy Made in Japan because it works, doesn't break and halt the line, and when and and when it does fail if ever the Japanese apologize endlessly, fix it on the spot, then spray 409 cleaner and clean up the mess them selves before leaving.

“Andy Laperriere, head of U.S. policy research at Piper Sandler, said Japanese officials are "describing it differently" when it comes to the investment plan. Japan's leaders, he said, see the $550 billion figure as a cap and inclusive of government loan guarantees. "Especially given that the Japanese believe they are being bullied into this commitment, they will almost certainly slow walk whatever investments they don't think are in their own economic self-interest," Laperriere wrote to clients in a Wednesday note.”

So you want higher tariffs on Japanese autos? Tariffs on Japanese cars were 2.5% pre-Trump, and now they are 15% (down from the extra 25% originally proposed). 15% will make an impact to imported autos, considering the average price of a new car is almost $50K, an extra $7,500 that needs to be charged or cut into margins will cause some kind of change (likely to include more US manufacturing).
I agree most Japanese cars are better than the US vehicles. We lost that edge over 40 years ago (except cars like the Wrangler, Corvette, Cadillac V series, maybe Tesla).
Japan still makes two great things: the insanely relliable/repairable/durable Honda and Toyota motorcars, and the Sony Playstation series of video game consoles.
In the 1980s, people often joked that Japan was going to rule the world with its mighty economy. Even though its products were mainly ripoffs of US tech progress, they were just better at making and selling stuff. They were the early leader in VCRs, digital cameras, personal audio players, many things.
Then here came the Koreans and the Chinese with their LG phones and their massively cheaper generic stuff and it was game over.
Why completely disregard the Plaza Accords? Come on. At least make it less obvious you're lying by omission.

Japan is Mum at Trump's request for Rail Gun, Energy Beam, Mach 25 Gravity Wave Manned Fighter Jets, Beyond Einstein Physics, Cave City Maker Robots, etc.
When Iran, China, Russia, Trump offer a trade no responce from Tokyo.
