I agree 100%. Seriously, who the hell would run for Jerry or Diljeet? Their priorities are all about college kids first. Why would any pro want to be treated like second tier to a college coach? It just doesn’t make sense.

Anyone who knows someone remembers when Chris and co went to NC, there were strong talks of him coaching the Puma elite group also based out of there. I believe Nike shut it down due to conflict of interest with the schools main sponsor. The dream was to create a pipeline from his college kids to home-grown pro athletes with a complete history. I’m not sure what the switch up is from. Clearly it’s been a huge issue for ed eyestone and Mike smith (!!). Their in-house pros sure haven’t done well /s

3 most important things to most of these people you are talking about in no certain order.
FAMILY—COLLEGE COACHING—PRO COACHING

Every person can only give 100%. So you divide it up.

If FAMILY is important to you and you give 50% of yourself to it you are stuck with only 50% to give to the other two.
I’ve heard many college coaches (that aren’t coaching pros) say that if they had to do it all over again they would have invested more in their family.

It is very difficult if not impossible to be successful at all 3 for any extended period of time.

Many College athletes that went pro are okay with continuing with their College coach knowing that they are only going to get 20% of their time.

You need to look at every situation differently. How many runners are on their rosters, how much additional administration duties do they have. do the pro athletes train in the same location and maybe the most important is the coach a good at what they do. there’s evidence that it can be done successfully and there’s evidence it doesn’t always work out.

I’ve heard about this too but in fairness to Milt, people’s opinions/thought process can change. he talks to Smith everyday, he’s more aware of the life/job balance that comes with having so much on your plate much more than he did 4 years ago. Coaching a men’s & women’s XC/TF team, being a director of said team, and then coaching a pro team is a lot and there will inevitably be times where your focus will be on one over the other. Add on that milt is a family man with kids still in school.

I’d trust Chris Milt’s opinion on changing coaches after college.

His athlete that had the most success after leaving him to go pro was…………. Grant Fisher!

Grant has spoken multiple times how he felt under cooked in college and was frustrated knowing others (prob Morgan McDonald) were doing more. But then he got to Jerry/altitude and developed greatly.

You made that up yourself. The quote says not to stay with your college coach.

There's no definitive answer to this. It's probably based around the needs, personality and training history of the individual athlete. Look at these 2 lists:

Stayed with college coach - Luis G, Abdi Nur, Nico Young...Mantz, Clayton Young, Rooks...Hocker Teare

Joined pro group - Nuguse, Hoare, Beamish, Klecker...Fisher, Kincaid, McGorty, Mo Ahmed, Brazier

Everyone on those lists made Olympic/World teams, and both groups produced medals and records. I think Milt has talked in the past about not wanting to coach pros and a college team simultaneously. The line about "NBA players not staying with college coaches" is just a line for his athletes. He's trying to push his baby birds (Wolfe and Strand) out of the nest, not taking shots at coaches who pull double duty.

Unless you've experienced being a college coach and pro coach, you have ZERO knowledge to give an informed opinion. Only the individual coach knows what he or she is capable of handling. Milt has his way and Diljeet has hers. Also, being a Director of a program is WAY different than only being an assistant or associate coach. Well funded programs that have a Director of Ops and a full-time assistant, a lot of the time consuming work is taken care of. Now you're just looking at actual coaching hours with the team which is a couple of hours a day 5-6 days a week. If my math is correct, that's 10-12 hours a week. Even if you throw in another 10 or so hours you're only at 20-30 hours a week tops. Yes, travel does take some time, especially during track season, but you're only looking at some on and off weekends. The family part is completely up to the coach. If he or she can balance that into their daily routine, which is doable all is good. Will they be busy? Of course, but who isn't? Don't forget, these coaches are doing something they LOVE, and grinding out hours of "work" is a labor of love. Who wouldn't want to spend most of there time doing the two things that they LOVE and what matters most in their lives...Family and Coaching?

Can’t comment on the Puma stuff, but regarding the part that I bolded- is this really a switch up? He’s been sending his grads to groups for at least a decade. See: McGorty, Fisher and the women who joined Jerry’s group.

Can’t think of any pros he coached but can think of many former athletes who went pro.

Honestly, pros deserve a real coach who can fully focus on them without juggling other jobs. Coaching college is already a huge responsibility and takes a lot of time and effort. If you’re also coaching pros, it feels like you’re neglecting one of those important roles. Both deserve full commitment to really succeed. Miltenberg is correct.

It’s pretty selfish of Jerry and Diljeet to try and do both. They know it’s impossible to give 100% to both sides, yet they’re still insisting on it. At the end of the day, it seems like it’s really just about the money for them.

No, I think it brings a lot of press to their program and school.
