To a non-runner or hobby-jogger, finishing a marathon is pretty elite. If you are insecure and want to people you're more than just a finisher, just say your time -- anything starting in "3" sounds fast to a non-runner.
To a real runner, 3:25 is not impressive. Do no say you are sub-elite if you are this slow, because a real runner will ask your times and it will be embarrassing that you overstated your abilities.
It’s a participation sport.
Sub Elites make the same amount of money from running as hobby joggers.
Expert here. Women are only attracted to the top 3% of men. The rest they pretend to like or just settle for because they can't attain a top 3% which is their initial choice.
This thread reminds me of one here a while ago, in which a guy talked about running in his local 5K. After the race, the guys who didn’t take it so seriously were talking to girls, and the sub elite wannabes were doing their cooldown runs.

in the eyes of the casuals, any marathon is good enough. even if you told people your time, most people wouldn't be able to judge how fast/slow that is. all they'll say is "omg that's awesome! i can't even do one mile".
with that said, sub elite has always been a vague term. i think elite runners are any runners who have a chance at winning a medal in a championship race. pro runners are those who are fast and have sponsors, but may not necessarily have any chance at medalling. sub elite would be the class behind pro runners
I skimmed most of this thread thinking op meant 2:25 not 3:25 because 3:25 is so slow that my brain was replacing it with something more reasonable without me even realizing haha

If you want to throw out an arbitrary range:
30 sec to a min per mile slower than what is considered elite.
Good god no. You don’t bring it up unless someone asks what you do for fun of your hobbies. Then you say I run marathons. They’ll ask if you’re any good and you say I’m not bad. That it.
And this will help you with the ladies how??????? Most women can carless about a marathon runner they are not impressed by it. Typically marathon runners are unattractively thin, not wealthy, and unimpressive. Think of it this way you are introducing yourself as the running version of a guy that thinks women are interested in his pick-up basketball career!
Off topic but the phrase is "Couldn't care less"! Why do Americans say "could care less"? It's the total opposite
I'm assuming this is what you meant by your "most women can carless" comment
I recently ran my first marathon, and I walked somewhere between 3.5-4 miles and went under 3:20:00. Technically anything over like 2:10:00 is sub elite whether it’s a 2:17:00 of a 14:21:17 so I guess it’s fair to say you is sub elite, I is sub elite, and Oprah Winfrey is sub elite

There is a 33 year old in our running community who does nothing but run. Well, he works, but he had no other interests, no children and is a total jerk.
At a marathon last spring, he didn't too well and bonked in the last few miles, finishing in a time of around 3:25:00. At the awards banquet, he was pounding the table in frustration, saying how he was going to "train his brains out and pound his time in the ground next year."
If he only saw the people laughing at him. What a joke.

The Marathon distance is the lunatic fringe of running. Not everyone, just those who go from one cycle to the next. Their whole identity is tied to being a “Marathoner.”
