But to your question, yes it would be unsatisfying if he breaks the WR this season because we don't really know who he is, and it won't make sense. He doesn't even have a full season of wins and fast times on the board yet...we don't even know when he is next racing, or do we?
It is very unlikely. We all know conditions for WR races are difficult to conjure, therefore opportunities between now and Worlds will be limited.
I think it would be interesting and good for the sport. Would probably make other guys run faster as the mental block would be down. El G was great but his record has been around for too long. There are some interesting posts on here about how 326 flat might be a fake time and the real world record is 326.12 where lagat was right behind him. Those guys were fast and just as suspicious as anyone today popping up out of nowhere. full throttle epo/hgh/who knows what else in the 90s vs supershoes/bicard/doping but probably not as full throttle (unless there is gear we dont know about), eh its a wash. are jakob and the americans/brits/french of today clean? cleaner than the 90s guys most likely, we will probably never know

Most of you don't know who Koech is because most of you have a Eurocentric view of this sport. You know Jakob because there was a television show about him and his family from the time he was a little boy to the time he won the Olympics. Koech is more talented than Jakob. The only difference is he didn't have the publicity and the resources that Jakob had as a boy. If Koech had a television show about him and his family, you would know who he is. Koech is foreign to you but he is not foreign to his village.
All Koech needed was an opportunity. Now the world will know his name.
Let’s completely set aside the possibility that he may or may not get busted in the future.
How would you feel if, after all this time, some relatively unknown pops up out of nowhere and breaks the WR? Would it be aggravating that so many seemingly more trustworthy athletes like Jakob, Kerr, Hocker, Nuguse, etc. have been getting closer and closer, only to see it get taken down by some unknown?
Obviously if Koech is doping, it would be preferable if he doesn’t touch the WR at all. But, given the suspicion around El Guerrouj anyway, do you really care if another highly suspect athlete takes the record? Is it “special” to you at all, or do you not really care to see it go?
just curious about what people think.
You mean like Dolt tying the WR in his second 100m race and then breaking it shortly thereafter?
You would know it was fake, keeping a big surprise below the radar, then unleashing it on the rightly disbelieving world.

Lol, El G was 100% doped, but at least he didn't get popped in an A-sample.
No it wouldn't be good for the sport. Just speaking rationally and going from the previous decades rate of Kenyan doping busts, there's probably at least a 25% chance of him being suspended in the course of his career. Two of the three best 1500m Kenyans since Bernard Lagat have been suspended, as well as World Junior champion. And this guy is way more suspicious than even them.
Some '18 year old' Kenyan running 3:24 or who knows, 3:23, winning a few global titles, and then getting busted, is not good for the sport. It might get a lot of people 'excited' in this place, in the wider scheme of things, it could be the actual death knell for the sport.
As far as 'making people run faster', yeah it might get the Kenyans and Moroccans doping even harder or with the same stuff this guy is taking, but as in the full-throttle EPO era, it will likely demotivate the rest of the world.
Why do you think the non-African performance rose so sharply the moment Kenyans and Moroccans started getting tested (or fell so sharply when the EPO era started)? Do you think Josh Kerr will continue training like a dog and eating like a monk if Koech and Wanyonyi are running 3:24? I'm pretty sure he'd retire before he's 30, maybe even before LA.
Agreed. But if you thought Kiptum was clean I have a bridge to sell you.
No interest in your bridge, as I don’t believe records are typically being broken these days by clean athletes. But some here seem to think that whites are more likely to be clean or some such nonsense.
I find it more enjoyable to keep these things in mind whenever someone runs super fast:
1) No one is doping, because if they were doping, they would test positive
2) Americans are less likely to dope than anyone else because I'm an American and we're better than the rest of the world
This lets me enjoy the sport because now I know everyone is clean, and especially the people I'm rooting for. Hope this helps!

So is Jakob’s obviously doped up 7:17 causing Africans to retire early? Or is it only the whites who give up in the face of a challenge?

There is a difference between having a Euro-centric view, and not knowing Koech because he is literally off the grid. I think the majority of people fall into the later.
Obviously people in his village know who he is, duh!
You should make an effort to learn about the talented runners from Africa who are just waiting for the opportunity to show what they can do. There are others who aren't on your grid but merit your attention and respect. They don't have the marketing machine of a reality television show promoting their journey to the Euro-American masses. But they have grit. And they dream of a better life for themselves and their families.

Always trying to use the dog eared race-card.
The Ingebrigstens didn’t come out of nowhere to have a TV show. This latest high-responding, allegedly teenage Kenyan literally did come out of nowhere to rise near the top of the all-time 1500m list. People like you are the real racists, no matter who or what you are.

too much standard bible nomenclature, thanks England NOT
I'd just be glad his name was something unique like Phanuel, instead of Joseph, Daniel, Joshua.
Not gonna check but I bet there's already been a pro Koech named Joseph, Daniel or Koech
Once we had two Daniel Komens, we had a problem. Both of them were world elites.
Please keep inventing new names, Kenya
Phanuel is the name of an angel in the Bible, so it is you who should probably educate yourself instead of telling Kenya what to do, as if Kenya is naming the kid anyway.

You cannot reject the truth with your simpleminded cries of racism. If Koech had the same promotion and resources that Jakob had as a boy, you would have known about him before this year.
Koech didn't come out of "nowhere". He came from Kenya, a beautiful country with a long history of producing many of the world's finest distance runners. Have higher regard for the country that is the top producer of elite runners in the world. Kenya isn't "nowhere", it is the CENTER of the distance running culture!
You only view Kenya as "nowhere" because of your ignorance and Eurocentrism. I bet you've never visited another country outside of the United States, Canada or Europe. Expand your horizons and maybe you'll learn something.

Bingo. We have the winner.
"We" know who Allie and here boyfriend are, yet they don't matter at all. And they won't ever matter.
Whenever I hear "we" on Letsrun I cannot help but think this:
It's not enough for me that he breaks the WR, I want him to totally destroy it and put it out of reach for another 25 years! Something like 3:23!
Then in 25 years time, the white kids will finally be getting close to 3:23, and just like magic, another 18 year old Kenyan will emerge and be the first to break 3:20.

Henrik Ingebrigtsen was a European champion BEFORE the tv show was filmed. Jakob is running 20 races a year for the past decade with a gradual improvement curve. Some villager running 3:27 in his second race or whatever is coming out of nowhere. He's a nobody.

None of your blabbering changes the truth. If Koech had the same promotion and resources that Jakob had as a boy, you would have known about him before this year. You know about Koech now, and many more people will know about him soon.

I would know about him if he ran more than twice in his life.

Incredible lack of reasoning. Never mind the poor reading comprehension. No wonder ao many Africans have no compunction against cheating.

So people who live in villages can't run fast? How does that work, exactly?
