While I think they did announce it as the national record, no way was that the MS national record for girls. 4:55 would have gotten you 6th at the MS mile at Brooks PR last year. Maybe it's a 6th grade record, if they keep those.

I think the main point here is that you shouldn’t say you’re in 3:50 shape and then open in 2:03…

It would be different if some of them weren’t wasting time talking about how they’re going to break the all time HS record.

If you say you’re going for an insane mark like 3:50, you need to go balls to the walls like Hedengren did in the girls’ race and not be afraid of the pain. Either that or they’re just not in shape to run low 3:50 like they said they were.

No drawback. He is one of the fastest kids in history so it seems he is pretty good at winning.

Hedengren ran lights out with ZERO competition and a personal pacer. Mad props to her!! But to compare races…just nahhhhhh.

The championship boys watched their friend go down and carted off injured. They spent ten minutes trying to get siked back up after the crash. They ran their race with no clear leader or winner. A kid believes in himself to claim a fast time….good for him! Keep goal setting and getting after those dreams. Haters gonna hate.

whatever it is, its the number three time in NM history, middle school or high school. and her sister Gianna had the number one time and lowered it to 4:43 in her race. good to see them both dominate their respective races last night and both top the podium. people had already been writing off Gianna after she finished way back at NXR SW as a freshman after winning it the previous year and then finishing 6th at NXN. glad to see her still running strong and setting PRs. and the kid who dusted all the boys in the road mile was impressive too.

Isn’t most sports commentary like this? It’s just that no one talks about track on ESPN. I agree that actual competitive athletes should probably ignore all of it, but I don’t think Let’s Run is an outlier.

They do keep those, and Isla Rahmer's 4:55 is, specifically, the 6th grade national girl's mile record.

Sadie Englehardt's 4:40.16 from 2021 is the official 8th grade & middle school national girls mile record as well as the age-14 world record, slightly surpassing Mary Decker's hand-timed 4:40.1 from 1973.

This tends to happen with very deep races like this. No one wants to be the sacrificial lamb and act as the defacto pacer by taking it out hot. Even if there is an actual pacer.

That's why its hard to get amped for any super deep non-championship race that's billed as a big showdown between big names like this, with the exception of any race involving Jakob. He's probably the only pro that is consistently gutsy (or stupid) enough to take it out hard from the gun.
