Last year in dropped from UTMB due to his knee. I wonder if that's the issue ?
Hayden had a minor knee surgery so did Zach Miller last dec. My guess is it is due to the new trail shoes they're racing in now with the carbon plate. It's one thing to race a marathon in carbon shoes, but to race a hundred miles in carbon shoes can't be good for the legs.
downvoted solely because you put Roche on there. Remember, David Roche also had never run a 100 when he set the CR at Leadville. So Ruhling has a shot.

We will see. You latch on to 1 person meanwhile Caleb is one of the best in the world and Adam won the damn thing before.
he trains like he is prepping for a 10k. will be lucky to make the start, and luckier to finish. in the meantime the knee looks like it's going to let him due a few more track workouts before the race.

Roche used that training approach to set course records at two 100 milers last year, Leadville and Javelina. But you knew that already. He's not likely to win WSER, but talking about him like he isn't among the possible contenders is stupid.

Yeah but even with Walmsley and Hawks not starting WS is still way more stacked than Leadville and Javelina combined.
Referring to Kilian Jornet? His best time on this course is slower than the women's course record. Western states is a running race, not a hiking race like utmb and hardrock is.
Well, you kinda right but wrong at the same time. Kilian won WS100 twice in 2010 and 2011. Courtney Dauwalter was 5 minutes faster in 2023, that's 12 years later.
Wrong! He's only won it once in 2011.
Also, to whoever had Roche in 5th. No chance, he either wins (unlikely) or DNFs. He'll back himself and go with the leader whatever the pace, like when he decided he could hang with one of the best 50k runners on the planet and blew up big time - Sorry, rolled his ankle....
Prior to Leadville he had a long history of DNFs, I think he just can't mentally hack being an 'also ran' so if he's not winning he'll tell himself he's injured and tap out.
I feel like we're in for a dark horse winner this year. Peter Frano, Hans Troyer, Dan Jones would be my guess.
Interesting with walms. What a bummer. Whatever happened, must have happened recently - as a quick google search showed he had a great spring thus far.

Plus the vertical gain/loss of Western states is 18000 ft gain and losses 23000 feet. Javelina is only 3000 ft of gain and loss. Leadville is 15000 ft of gain and loss. Another thing is how do we know he's being honest about his training? Someone lying about how they train to get more clients seems like within the realms of possibilities.
