The whole point of DQs, to the best of my knowledge, is to stop athletes from gaining an unfair advantage. I'm almost certain that nobody suggested, when rules were being proposed, that this'll be great because not only can we disqualify cheaters, but now we'll also be able to disqualify people for doing harmless, accidental things that had absolutely no effect on the outcome of the competition, just to stir up bad feelings and annoy people. But here we are.
Maybe 2 steps inside the rail at 9800m of a 10000m race that he clearly had won and obviously was not intentional. Ridiculous DQ. A shame these DQs tend to happen often at the D3 outdoor champs (5k in 2023).
It says he is still a junior so hopefully he stays healthy and uses this as fuel for his summer training and races to come. He ran that 10k with guts.
The 5k was a false start, and it was blatant. The penalty for false start is DQ.
Even if this is true, the entire curve full of people watching all saw the event and either pointed or exclaimed at it. This includes Wartburg and anyone else over there, and in another world where 'Wartburg' didn't yell at the official, I am sure the DQ would've still been made, either by officials or another team. Wartburg has respect for distance but they're also trolls in the distance world, but that being said I just see no reason why their team or the coach would want to disqualify Nathan for that minor error. Only argument I can see is to try and get their guys that would've gotten 10th and 8th into 8th and 6th or something, which would be REALLY cheap. While it was ***completely undeserved***, especially in a race that is 25 laps, all the blame can't be placed on a suspicion of a singular team supposedly exposing it.
This happens because local D3 meet officials do not seriously enforce rule infractions. Athletes running on tracks with no rails; 4 x 100 (or 4 by 400) stepping on lines. Regardless of race, don't look back, and if a lane event (or relay), then stay in your lane and hand the dam stick off! Does not help that usa men 4x100 cannot seem to figure this out either!
It wouldn't surprise me if NCC coaches protested. They spent the entire CCIW meet trying to get other athletes DQed for shoe violations. Seems to be their thing.
Can confirm. Ridiculous if true. First ever national champion. If North Central coach did this lost all respect for the program. RWU is the champion no question.
I absolutely could be wrong, but there is an official sitting, pointing directly at where it would have happened. If it was a protest, it would normally take a lot more time to resolve. It would take a lot of time to file that protest, so I can't reasonably believe that it was a protest.

so i won the race, but i got DQ'ed for taking 3 steps on the infield in the final 150 of the race when looking back, which is grounds for an official disqualification. i know it sucks to have a national title taken away from you like this, but im still happy with how this all unfolded. this is my 3rd race this season. i ran a 1500 with a monster close, which made me realize i could really do damage in a 10k if i was in it with 400 to go, and i ran a 10k where i solo'd the last 5k in 14:37, which told me i can run well from the front. injuries held me out of the rest. this is my 4th time racing at nationals. the past 3 times i have never once led the race. this past xc season i was a favorite to win it going in and i left that race never actually being a factor in the outcome- just going along for the ride. my goal was to just to be able to leave this race knowing i went for it, and that's what i did. i went for it and i got the experience of making a real move in a real race against some competition and i don't care if i died, if the move didn't work, or whatever. i got the experience of being a real factor in the race, and that's something i can walk away with happily. i'll see you next year.

As someone who was there with an athlete in the race: the officials DQd Tassey, then Roger Williams protested the DQ, and lost. If there's anyone to blame, it's the officials, no other team protested the result.
It was a really bad situation- everyone knows who won the race, they didn't even tell Tassey until after he had done interviews so it was a pretty harsh way to find out. Technically it's a rule but it didn't affect the outcome and that kid ran an amazing race.
There were a bunch of other DQs all day as well and often is at nationals. Most regular meets aren't policed well as there aren't that many officials. Then at nationals, you have officials everywhere and they're hyper sensitive to any rule violation.
OK, I watched the video and my conclusion is that doing the job of officiating and enforcing the rules correctly can suck sometimes, but that's the job. The officials have to be fair to all teams and all athletes, and the only way to do that is to enforce the rules as written, and particularly when there is absolutely no wiggle room, or space for subjectivity, no debate about "did he or didn't he?"
He clearly violated the rule. It is an obvious DQ. While they might have hated doing it, the officials are paid and entrusted to enforce the rules.

Why would the officials be to blame for doing their job? This is as clear a DQ as i've ever seen on the video. If a shot putter has a foul that is a massive throw, we can't simply measure it a couple of feet short as a penalty. It's simply a foul. You need to stay on the track on the curves unless it's a case of someone bumping into you and forcing you out.

It's a rule, and he violated it. "The officials are bad for literally doing their job" is a weird stance to take.
The problem here is that there's effectively no other conclusion than DQ. He gained very little advantage. His off was due to him losing his balance, not an attempt to gain unfairly, in fact he probably lost time because of it.

The referee reviews the report and other evidence, and makes a decision to disqualify or not disqualify. - Athlete and coach are notified of a disqualification. They can appeal the decision to the Jury of Appeals (generally made up of coaches). The jury can uphold the referee's original decision or can reverse it. The appeals process ends there.

Is there anywhere in there that the officials can choose to ignore the obvious, videotaped evidence of a rules infraction that results in disqualification and moves everyone behind that runner up one spot?
This was as obvious as having all your toes over the line on the long jump. We can't excuse it because it was a great jump, or an otherwise winning jump. Even if the jump allows you to win by a foot and the inch didn't matter, we can't unsee what we all see.
