Fine. If this is considered DQ worthy taunting then this sport has no chance.
A sport shouldn’t need taunting to have a chance.
I never said that, and I agree with you. I still don't think this is taunting, but you do, and maybe you're correct. It still would make the sport look lame to DQ him for it regardless of intention. That's all.

I watched the video of the race and it was not a big deal even though some people might interpret his (Birnbaum's) hand gestures as being somewhat patronizing to his competitors but it was not a big deal and I've seen much worse. He seems to be popular and most of the his competitors acknowledged him after the race.
My god some of you are miserable. Birnbaum ran a great, strategic, race and maybe (?) taunted a 4x conference champ?
He was calm and collected all the way down the homestretch and took Bob to the woodshed- I'd celebrate too if I were that good. We have enough stodgy and fake-nice runners on the distance side, one showing a little flair is not ruining the sport

A DQ seems ridiculous. But definitely a bad look for a guy with the 31st fastest 5,000 time in the country who got 74th at XC nationals. Not exactly Mohammed Ali.
