If Hartman can’t break 15:03, then she won’t break 31min. She needs to get her 5k time down.
She’s certainly capable of getting under 15:03. She’s got PRs of 4:06/4:24/8:46/15:11. The combination of speed & endurance is there. If she doesn’t go under 15:03 this season perhaps in the summer at a USATF event or next year.
Rather than worry about what Valby accomplished. Hartman’s main objective should be to remove Tuohy’s 5k NC State collegiate record before she leaves school.
That is all.
No, her main objective should be doing the best she can and for XC doing her best to help her team.
It seems like some people get triggered a bit when someone mentions a record of their favorite runner being broken. Getting a record is a good think especially if you’re a fan of US running and it’s an American athlete that breaks the record. It should be celebrated, not diminished.
What good would that do if you can't read? You didn't call out the poster who brought Tuohy into the thread so quoting it would merely bog down the thread with repeated text.
Not sure, but can’t wait for every top ten list to be completed inundated with bouncy shoe times. Boys 3200m list is almost there. Only two more times to eliminate before it’s completely filled with post 2020 nonsense. We can do it!
It's on borrowed time. Parker's Valby's collegiate resume looks better than it is because while yes, she did break some records, it wasn't by an astonishing amount by any means and her competition was weak compared to other years, especially after Katelyn Tuohy started having some health problems. You also have the perennial case that women's collegiate running barely ever gets the best young female distance talents in the world, because they all go pro as soon as they run a globally competitive time. So, the young women you have in the NCAA have been mid second and third tier.
With the shoes and more talented domestic athletes competing than in the past, we'll likely continue to see the women's records broken on an almost annual basis for a while. Jane Hedengren already is almost as fast in the 5k and is still only in high school. Valby's 10k women's record is weak and is on borrowed time. All it will take is Kosgei, Hartman, or some other more talented woman to beat Valby's marks. All you would need is basically one Hassan level talent, and not even necessarily at that high of a level, but just globally competitive like some of these Ethiopian women who have run low 3:50s for 1500. If anyone like that wanted to go into the NCAA instead of going pro, then we'll start to see the women's collegiate records fall left and right. The 10k record will easily dip under 30 and the 5k will be in the 14:30s at least.
Valby's record of 30:50.43 has a good chance of being beaten this year.
New Mexico's Pam Kosgei ran 31:58.51 at the Don Kirby meet in Albuquerque at 5120 ft elevation. That converts to 30:41.31 (at sea level) with the altitude converter that I used. Kosegi also has a 31:02.73 that she ran a day after NC State's Grace Hartman soloed to a 31:20.60.
I am assuming that the two of them will not race until the NCAAs. I believe that if the weather is good that they will push each other and that one or both can beat the record.
I couldn't disagree more. There's basically no chance of anyone trying to run a super fast 10k at this point in the season, let alone a collegiate record attempt. That's what Stanford and the 10 were for, and she already ran 31:02 there (after going out way too fast). Conferences are coming up soon too, so I highly doubt any coaches want their athletes to go for it in a 10k right now. Valby's record lives on for another year.

Not by an astonishing amount?
Here's the all-time all-dates top-10 for 5K/10K after Valby's 2023-2024 season. She smashed the 10K by 28 seconds and only 6 runners in collegiate history had ever come within a full minute of her time. She only broke the 5K by 4 seconds, but she also produced 4 of the fastest 5 times in history. Only one runner had ever broken 15:00 once; Valby did it 4 times.
Her competition was not weak. She beat Kosgei, Lemngole, Olemomoi, and Halladay-Lowry, 4 of the 5 people not named Valby who have broken 15:00 in collegiate history. Tuohy did not have health problems; she simply does not have the same talent as people like Valby Lemngole, Kosgei, etc. Tuohy was not "competition" for Valby.

“certainly capable”? Has she run the time or not??
So how well does Hartman handle the heat at summer track meets?

Your 5K list is outdated.
Kosgei and Lexy Holladay Lowry went 14:52 at Bryan Clay and Hedengren who is still in high school went 14:57.
I believe the list is intentional "as of the end of the 2023-2024 year" ie as of when Valby ran her times. But then the data is twisted with the claim of the runners she beat not being weak (who ran the times claimed the following year).
But I do not buy the original claim that the competition was weak. It has been getting stronger every year so when Valby ran her times it was the strongest to date. Yes, this year, the competition would be stronger still.

Did you know that winning the race and scoring 1 point, is the ultimate way to help the team?

and that has what to do with becoming the fastest 5K runner ever for NC State????? Which was the claim responded to "Hartman’s main objective should be to remove Tuohy’s 5k NC State collegiate record before she leaves school."

Wowsers! And maybe a Tuohy fan got their feeling hurt?
“I think a Valby fan just got their feeling hurt :)“

I think you should reread the posts about Hartman and her objective.

Agree.
Doubtful the 10,000 record gets broken. Competitive 10ks typically end up tactical, leaving it down to a kick.
Valby had no competition in the 10k her senior year. She could push it as hard as she wanted, with no fear of losing.
