Truett Haines 2:38 Boston In jeans

My post was more specifically calling out the wider universe of fitness influencers, hybrid athletes, and Rogan-sphere guys who shoot up for the 'gram because they can't just be mediocre at something and keep to themselves. I wasn't actually too familiar with Truett before I saw these results but I have a pretty solid opinion of his dad, especially after he had Cole Hocker and Centro on his podcast.

But I did some digging and found that on Athletic.net there's a Truett Hanes who competed for Marist HS in Eugene graduating in 2015 with outdoor PRs of 4:40 in the 1500, 9:51 in the 3k, and a 17:18 xc 5k PR. As someone who was actually a pretty similar level coming out of high school, a sub 2:40 marathon is far from a given with that kind of modest running. But sure, it's not totally unbelievable... until you add in that he's carrying all that extra muscle, wearing jeans, and he ran Boston 6 days before Eugene. That's where it gets ridiculous. Again, if he was ok with just being a normal guy who lifted and ran marathons for the fun of it, no one would care. But when every achievement needs to be extreme and the physique has to be up to current inflationary social media standards, things just start to not smell right.

I would agree with you if the guy hadn't run Boston six days ago, and then looked fresh and full of energy at Eugene. He jumped up and tapped the finish line clock at the end of the Eugene Marathon. No man. He's not running those times back-to-back natural.

At first I was annoyed by all the people hyping influencer like Jeans guy. It was like the 90s/2000s when people thought lance armstrong was clean.

At least there was plausible deniability. Now with guys like Ken Rideout, Jeans guy, the lady age grading 105% etc...there isn't. People are just dumb, can't critically think, or think that doping/steroids/epo/HGH are ok.

This guy ain't clean either.

2:38 is very impressive. I bet you won't find a single person under 2:55 with anything close to his body type. Pretty sure modern science is a big contributor to his success.

How tall is this guy? Also, is he running in real jeans or are these like my wife's jeans that are basically stretchy tights? Men can buy "jeans" that feel like Sporthills these days.

Ken Rideout is another one who is absolutely doped to the gills. Running 2:30 marathons in his mid 50s looking like a bodybuilder. Yeah ok buddy

If you've been around fitness long enough you get a good idea of what's possible and what's not.

This must trigger the skinny hobby joggers who worked their butt of to BQ. You don't need to be skinny to run this kind of time. Low body fat matters the most. Him having extra masses probably did hurt him like with Nick Bare. What is his PB? Even if he was on stuff, I don't think it helps him with running. Was this guy a former skinny runner like Bare and Hall? That would be the most likely explanation.

Good post/points. Truett has made reference that when in HS he was mailing it in and not working hard especially during off season.

I tried to tie in Weldon Johnson here (founder, LRC) Weldon was a 31:xx in college and never progressed often injured. Them post college moved to Flagstaff and worked his way up to 100+mpw* The approach at the time was a mix of Maffetone (lowHR@8-9min/miles) with high altitude and only doing sessions on fresh legs which were consistent since the low HR/slow daily miles. All of this led to a consistent training stimulus absorbing training and realizing his talent running 28:10 for a 3+min PR.

We could also parallel this with Brian Sell since Truett's HS PRs are similar. Brian Sell ran 2:10.

The bottom line Truett could have always had this in him as a runner and is now realizing his training can be specific to what he benefits from.

I don't keep up with every influencer but I believe Bare's T results being flatlined pointed to exogenous T and subsequent break.

I think you're focused a little too much on the running aspect of all this. If this was just some running influencer with a mediocre set of high school PBs who ran two sub 2:40 marathons back to back, no one would really care. But when you're doing this as someone who is maintaining a heavy, muscular frame that doesn't slow him down or necessitate extra recovery time (quite the opposite, in fact) it reads as suspicious. Throw in the fact that it is basically his job to peacock on social media and compete for attention amongst the other roid runners, I'd say it doesn't look for him coming out clean. It's been a while since I read Weldon's article and am not too familiar with Brian Sell's progression but I doubt either of them took a detour into hybrid-athlete training, pullup world records, and then threw on a pair of jeans that they had a brand partnership deal with before they made their breakthroughs. Again, if it was just about the running it wouldn't be noteworthy, both for suspicions on here but also for Truett's social media marketing.

I am cornered into thinking of the running aspect because of the midpack time, regardless of his social/income/media space.

Fair play though about his build. If he rips a 2:27 at Chicago at his current build then it's legit sus and lrc will prove he's had exogenous help.

However if he's dropping weight (dropped 20+lbs since 1 year training) that's another reason to believe. I have seen and get this whole culture of "rejuvenation" centers. Guys like Rideout/Bare may make deals with themselves that's it's justified for their brand and they need HCG, T, DHEA, HGH because of their training. But they would not be at those training peaks without said pharma substances.

These roided up tattooed influencers are such a plauge on our sport. Not all good publicity is good publicity. It's absolutely ridiculous that guys like this and Matt Choi will be on every podcast spreading nonsense about running and almost no one will hear from a guy like Ryan Ford who ran 2:08.

I'm actually baffled by all the equivocation here- the guy is already way beyond 'legit sus', I mean...come on guys! I can only imagine the people posting here think Chris Hemsworth, The Rock et al got so swole from eating chicken and an extra set of deadlifts every week.

I've been thinking about this since Truett passed me at around mile 4 in Boston (when I remember thinking to myself "lol, see you on heartbreak" but then never did) and have come to the realization that there are a few major things we haven't been taking into account.

1). As dedicated runners it's ingrained into our consciousness that doping is sacrilegious and is among the biggest sins one can commit in our sport. However, these hybrid guys (Barre, Hanes, Rideout, Choi) are coming from a separate world where PED use is almost universally accepted. These guys are more likely to tune in to the Arnold Classic than a Diamond League meet and they spend lots of time in gyms where a huge amount of the guys are on something. There's just no stigma around it in their world.

2). I think we've also collectively underestimated just how effective full-throttle doping can be. Like, we all know it can take a 13:15 guy and make him run 12:55, but for a 200lb rec runner to throw down two marathon PRs in 6 days? A 52 year old meathead running multiple sub-2:30's? Holy hell. I think it was the Victor Conte interview a year or two ago where he mentioned that all the top sprinters were on EPO because it allowed them to crush training every single day without burnout or fatigue. Seems that the stuff works.

3). These guys have nothing to lose. Their followers aren't pure runners either. If they get popped, stop improving, or generally lose interest in the sport they can just pivot and bring their followers with them on the next journey and probably sell them a bunch of new stuff along the way.

Can they get popped for running 2:38? I mean, who is going to test these guys? They aren't pros. I was running sub 2:30s and never once got asked to take a drug test during my road racing days (I was tested many times in college).

Anyway, I think most of them are doped up meatheads. But believe it or not, I am not convinced Haines is on the juice. He may just be nuts. I will get massively downvoted for this, but 2:38 just isn't that fast. I know guys with love handles running high 2:30 times. If it is in you and you put in the work, it'll happen. Now, if he continues to drop time without dropping weight, I will change my mind.

To maintain his muscle mass with the volume of running he must do to run Boston + Eugene completely fresh less than a week later? Do you even lift, bro?
