There is an interview I once saw with Dave Smith but I can't seem to find it now. He related a story about Roe.
If I remember correctly, he was walking through the hotel lobby and saw her talking on the phone. As he walked past, he gave her a nod and he noticed she was crying. He thought," Uh oh, she's talking to mom." I guess she always calls her mother when things are not going good. He left her alone and she came up to see him after the phone call. She told him she had run her last race and wanted to quit. They talked about it for a while and she seemed pretty committed to quitting. He didn't get angry to try too hard to discourage her. He understood her pre-race nerves sometimes got the best of her. He went to sleep that night assuming she would not run the next day. But the next day, she decided to give it one more try and just give it her all in what would be her last race ever.
That race turned out to be the 2022 NCAA Indoor 3000m where she won her first (and only) NCAA title.
I am not saying that is not true, but it does seem odd as she did not run the day before that winning 3000. her last race result in TFRRS before that was 2 weeks prior and she won, in fact she won the DMR, 3000, mile at the Big 12 championship that weekend.
The key words are “sometimes pre-race nerves got the best of her.” It has nothing to do with having a bad race, everything to do with putting immense pressure on herself.
For anyone who might scroll past the Cherry Blossom thread, I think this deserves attention.
Taylor Roe dominated, splitting 30:56 through 10k and continuing to roll, winning by over a minute. OT marathon champ Fiona O’Keefe was left almost 2 minutes behind.
This is technically a World’s Best by 39 seconds, although women have split much faster in half marathons. The American Record prior to today was 51:23 by Keira D’Amato.
49:53 is 1:05:15 half marathon pace. Weini Kelati’s AR is 1:06:09, and Roe ranks #5 U.S. all time at 1:07:22. Roe could threaten Kelati’s mark next year if things continue to go well. She has had an improbably great first year as a pro, so far.
Of course, it is not really possible to get good equivalents using WA tables for road races like on the track, but this is 1209 points, equal to a 1:06:13 for HM and 2:22:25 for marathon.
The more reliable WMA calculator has it at 30:20 for 10k and 1:05;20 for the half.

= ~ 1:06:30 / 10mi is only 76.3% the distance of the halfmth

lol how’s it equivalent to 1:05:20 for the half when it’s (exactly) 1:05:20 pace?
She did quite a few podcast interviews after her half champs win and I find her so endearing. She talks frequently about her pre-race nerves and frequent panic attacks before races. It’s nice to see a pro talking about this openly. I hope she is able to stay healthy and keep the momentum going, because she is obviously super talented. Specifically on the roads.
