The coolest thing about GST is the match-ups without wavelights or pacers. You never see 800 and 1500 guys go head-to-head in a Diamond League, and if you did, Jakob would immediately drop them with the wavelights being set to 3:26.

With Diamond League, you see bonafide world record attempts. Jakob is right to not waste his time dabbling in GST when 2025 could be a pivotal year for him (i.e: 1500/mile world records, 1500 world title at the same track he won his Olympic title). Instead, he's right where he needs to be; in an intense training block at altitude preparing to run 3:25 and 3:42 and obliterate his competition.

Both are good for the sport in different ways.

A year ago, Kerr was coming off dominant two mile and 3k indoor performances and would soon beat the best in the world at Pre. He ain’t at that level this year. For a guy who says he wants his legacy to be “one of the best to have ever done it” races this are a permanent stain. No way around it. When you race as infrequently as Kerr does, dropping a turd like this weighs heavily.

Kerr ran very well for his first race of the year. He is taking too much sh!t for that race. He put himself in a very good position. Just didn't have it in the end.

Truth be told, he is less talented than Wanyoni, Hocker, or Nuguse. But he is still good enough to win under the right circumstances. And he very well might have the best racing iq of the bunch.

Kerr’s whole image is based on beating jakob. The thing is beating jakob is extremely painful and kerr cannot amp himself up without that rivalry. Thats why he talk the crap it gives motivation. Trying to bear Jakob could very well have burnt him out or he has lost the nerve with too many painful races and workouts

His antics really are off putting. I would like to cheer for another European, but he makes it very difficult. Coiffed hair and green silk suits are a bit unpalatable for most.

This is where I am at with Jakob. He truly wants to be known as the middle distance GOAT and he is making all plans around that. His records and doubling at two championships already this year. He is just building the portfolio. GST doesn't help that.

It would seem that the dietician he hired helped him lose weight at the cost of his long term health and durability.

I actually agree with your whole post except for maybe the last line... the other 1500m specialists have all had a great build up and it showed in their racing this Winter, but perhaps that means Kerr has the most room to improve in the next two months before Summer.

I don't think Nuguse and Hocker and Jakob will see a big jump up in fitness because they are already at world record fitness. Kerr on the other hand could race into shape with the GST series and be ready for the real outdoor season once the DL racing really starts in the Summer?

I am just trying to find a way to put the "rough Winter" in a potentially positive light:
Kerr might have had the shortest season once we reach Worlds in September (and this might benefit him relative to guys who have been racing all-out since December of 2024).

I am not sure I agree with your logic on this one because "Kerr ran well until it mattered" is not a complement. This was such a slow race, literally any pro runner would have been in a good position at that point.

They were running at slower than 3:35 pace (until they started kicking). So to say that he was "right in the mix" until the last 100m is fine, but that is because until that point they were running 10 seconds slower than Jakob's pace.

I lump him in with the Americans. He came through the NCAA system, is based in the US, has the arrogance of a stereotypical American, doesn't run European championships because he thinks those are beneath him.

Jakob was hiding today. Neil Gourley ran world indoors with Jakob, and he raced the big dogs today in Kingston.

Yeah no. Jakob was at home polishing and admiring his 2 World Indoor Championship gold medals which he just won. An event which all of his “competition” was too scared to show up to contest against him because they knew they had no chance in hell of beating him.

No disrespect to Gourley, but he is a journey man middle distance runner compared with Jakob, and the GST cash would make a difference to his annual income. Whereas it is chump change for Jakob.

If Gourley improves a bit more he has a shot for the win.
