Nothing I hate worse about the 1500 than seeing these top elite races won in 3:35. Is this a championship with medals and prizes and sponsorships at stake? Were they tired from rounds?
Or did none of them have anything better to do than sit around 7 seconds slower than their PRs and then race the last lap.
I always love when people talk about track tactics as if they are high-level activities when the reality is that even at the professional level, there's not much thinking going on. In fact, it takes a special group of 1500 meter idiots to jog the first 700 meters, thereby turning the race into an 800 meter finish, with 800 meter Olympic gold medalist in the field.
To be fair, Wanyonyi has shown great ability in 2k XC against other Kenyan runners. His coach said that he runs close to 70-80 miles. This is not a huge surprise result.
He runs 70-80 miles a week? That's insane for an 800 runner.
....
Wanyonyi running 3:35 didn't surprise me. I'm Letsrun prediction I predicted a 3:33.3 winning time and thought it would be Wanyonyi.
To beat him in a 1500m ANY of the big four will have to make it fast enough that Emmanuel let's go before the last 500m. If Emmanuel Wanyonyi gets to take the lead between 500 to 300m out it will be EXTREMELY DIFFICULT for anyone to pass him.
Wanyonyi could probably approach 3:30.7 this year, so they gonna have to scorch it to make him let GO in upcoming GST. Heck he might just decides to double at Worlds thanks to GST.

You hate 3:35 because it is highly likely you were never a truly a competitive runner. Hobby joggers / also rans don't dictate races, they run the best pace they can while still getting dropped.
Once you start to be in contention for the win, the tactics change. Which runner should have led the entire race by himself at 3:28 pace?

These guys probably have spent the past 6 weeks doing base training and no speed. You expect them to be in peak shape now?
These payouts could change the game enough that some athletes do adopt more of a year-round sharp approach. Or even peak for this if it’s more lucrative. I’m sure Dylan Jacobs would agree

Emmanuel Wanyonyi: How soon will he totally annihilate the middle-distance WRs?

This is basically why I love Jakob so much. Without him, most races begin to look like this one (DLs might be 3:32 races tho).

Dumb bunnies.
60 second opening laps isn't a jog. That's why Arop wasn't even in it

Running a severely negative split 800m at the end of a 1500m is not like a 800m, when 98% of the time its a positive split acid death battle in the last 300m. It takes extreme aerobic capacity to crush distance based master tacticians. Wayonyi can go well under 3:30 if he can beat these guys in this type of race. Crushing the 1-3 Olympic finish list brings into question doping for sure. Kerr, Hock and Goose are rigorously tested. Kenya has had a ridiculously alarming number of doping bans and he's certainly questionable. True 800m runners, like Hoppel and Arop, get smoked and no shame to them, that's what's expected. Wayo has the red blood cells rn. Wayo wins this race any way today, too windy for anyone to push early. Even a 2:00 800m wrecked Hock, this is why you don't lead.

Josh Kerr was laughing at him in an interview yesterday. Bet he’s not laughing now. LMAo.
I think he was laughing at Arop. Hocker in his interview with Jon was like I can’t get read on Wanyonyi in an ominous way. Wanyonyi was definitely media-trained to not reveal a whole lot and such but off his body language I was thinking this guy is not worried one bit about an unpaced 1500.

Keep in mind, this is what everyone said about Brazier after his 3:35 upset win at the Big Friendly in 2020. Turned out he was just a 3:35 (maybe 3:32 tops?) guy who could close really, well (52.1) at that pace.
