But you don’t have to go so far back in time. Laros was running 3:29.5 when he was 19 years old
But you are sort of proving our point that Kitchen and Tostenson are amazing. The fact that the correct comparison is to the athlete who got 6th at the Olympics is why we are amped for the Crater kids.
If you think it valid to compare them to all-time Junior greats like Myers and Laros, then they must be really, really amazing.
An athlete's age may appear to be incorrect because Athletic.net calculates ages on December 31st of the current year (or the year of the result) for athlete bios and rankings. So, if an athlete hasn???

But we aren’t comparing. We are saying Laros, Myers and Ruthe are stratospheres ahead of your overage high school kids when it comes to talent and limitations. Bet you think Casey Clinger is an up and coming superstar as well.

Well, you are literally making a comparison. You are saying, "these kids are nowhere nearly as good at Myers and Laros" which is true. But it is also weird to bring up Myers and Laros in a thread about two kids from rural Oregon. The only reason to do that is to point out that we have to look at the next level in order to "put them in their place" in the grand scheme of things.
And say what you will, but Kitchen looks like he is 15 in that picture (above), so at least we know he isn't just one of those boys who is a fully grown man at age 14 with a beard and receding hairline.

Just so people know, the430miler is the Nico spammer who makes threads saying gay people are bad. I was always a fan of the430miler so I was disappointed in finding this out. People should ignore him

" from rural oregon" ?? Lol.
What does that have to do with anything?
Is it harder to become a great runner If raised in a rural setting?
Thank you. Hmmm let’s all get excited about a 19 year old in high school 😂😂😂😂 here’s some straws let’s run. Clutch away. Steve Cram was in the Olympic final at 19.
If we can only celebrate and get excited about the best ever, that's kind of boring.
I was born in 1987 and graduated in 2007. I was 20. Redid 8th grade due to a broken arm making me miss basketball season.
I have never heard of any state enforcing age rules, and they def aren't going to enforce then on a good hearted kid who rubs a sub 4 mile like Tostensen. His 340 is worth about a 354 full mile. Close to Alan Webb territory .
If someone is doing stuff like that girl who whopped the runner with relay baton, I'm sure the state could use an age regulation to throw dirt on her.

I just found out Josiah Tostensen is 19 on May 6th. It seems a bit off to me that he’s still in high school instead of starting college as a freshman. He’s supposed to be in college right now.

It means this isn't a school that pulls in kids from a huge population center or has kids transfer to train with their coach or these teammates.
Kids who go to Crater are from the Crater school district. Nobody on Earth is sending their kids there or moving there for the running. It is wild that such a small school could have some of the best HS runners ever...
So yes, that makes it more amazing than Jesuit (of Portland) that pulls the best kids from all over the Portland metro area, sort of skimming the cream of the crop from neighboring schools.
That is why having four ultra elite runners all from the same small, rural area is amazing - Max King, Tyrone Gorze, Tayvon Kitchen, and Josiah Tostenson. That is a pretty solid roster!
p.s. King went on to be the World 100km champ and an 8:30 steeple chaser. Not too shabby! Gorze is running for the UW Huskies now and is their 4th fastest 10km runner of all time! And that was set in his debut at the distance!

Josiah Tostensen is turning 19 on May 6th, and his teammate will also be turning 19 this summer. These guys are basically college age and should be out there running track as freshmen in college at this point. It's a bit of a downer to realize that such a dynamic duo should actually be competing at the collegiate level instead of high school. Crazy how things work out sometimes. I guess things are not what they seem. What a bummer
It's about high school records in sports, particularly track and field. I find it quite surprising that someone who is 19 years old or turns 19 in May can still compete in high school and potentially set records during that calendar year. That is a true college freshmans age, not high school. In my opinion, there should be a cut-off age after which one cannot be considered for high school records anymore. Allowing older athletes to compete can take away from the achievements of younger athletes and the integrity of the records set by them. At the end of the day, age does play a significant role in sports, and it's something worth considering when it comes to high school competitions.
