There’s a big difference in the concentration required to run laps around a track and doing flips off a vault or uneven high bars. With the latter, if you’re off your game you can get paralyzed.

In most media reports it seems as though Jakob’s sister suffered the most at the hands of Gjert and the running Ingebritsens have been mostly standing up for her rather than themselves. They don’t come across as whining ingrates, they strike me as siblings doing the right thing on behalf of their most vulnerable sib. Good for them. Their dad is an ass at best and he’s likely a criminal. Doesn’t matter that he coached Jakob well. That is worth nothing when faced with abuse.

People have to compartmentalize difficult and serious things in their lives all the time. Divorce, loss of loved ones, being stalked, about to get evicted, life-threatening disease diagnoses, cancer treatments, supporting a parent with dementia, supporting a kid with drug addiction, etc.
And people deal with those difficult and serious things while working jobs that are actually important, like surgeons, teachers, pilots, firefighters, etc. Jakob is having to deal with a difficult situation while running. Have some perspective.

Staying in Norway instead of going to China would not have hurt his ability to provide for his wife and child. Many of the best athletes in the sport don't compete at world indoors. It's optional. He didn't need to be there. He should have stayed home with his family.

The whole thing is sad. I've been reading up on it this morning. Some points.
1.The saddest to me - Jakob says he doesn't remember any good times with his dad. He also only refers to Gjert as "the defendant" and stopped calling him dad at age 11.

Emotional abuse isn't a crime in the US. I mean they spent a lot of time talking about how Gjert didn't like Jakob playing on his playstation.

The video showed the brothers with their father in St. Moritz, Switzerland, at a training camp. Jakob Ingebrigtsen brought a Playstation, and his father reportedly reacted to that. – I create your life so you can live from it.
