People who get excited about a 19 year old "failing" (ie, still running faster than you ever did) are pathetic. Only reason I can think of to dislike Birnbaum is that he seemed to have a bit of an ego as a high schooler. You would too if you ran 3:57 in high school.

Jerry lives rent free in so many people’s heads on this board it is comical.
The kids on the team love Jerry and Shalane. They are just getting started.
I have no problem with Jerry or Shalane but I do think it is more complicated than that. There are kids who are frustrated as well because being injured sucks.
It is also hard with the roster caps and the influx of "new talent" from other schools. Kids who have spent three years running for the Ducks (and being on-and-off injured) are now being shown the door because their roster spot is going to a transfer who isn't even taking classes at UO yet...
I can see how it is hard to be in a program like that if you are not one of the top top kids.
