Assuming he doesn't get injured or popped for PEDs, where do you expect him to be come Tokyo? His indoor season has been insane, but where does he stack up against Wanyonyi, Arop, Sedjati, et al?
I'd say he looks like has about a 50/50 shot at a metal, which would have been a crazy thing to say a few months ago.
An American record outdoor
He’s doing what I expected Clayton Murphy to be doing several years ago. I’m hoping that Hoey can fulfill his potential within the next few years, unlike Murphy who’s PR was from the final in Rio after his final season in the NCAA and never ran faster as a professional.
He is going to be world indoor champion in the 800m and break the AR outdoors at some point - maybe in the final of the world champs in Tokyo. 1:41.2 seems reasonable. He could get any position between 1-5 at that time depending the way the race unfolds. He is way ahead of Hoppel who, barring injury, will also be under 1:42 again.
To be fair to Clayton, he was coached by Pete (or said he was coached by Pete) which has been the downfall of better runners than he. His double in Sacramento was his downfall.
Dude, as much as everyone #onhere absolutely was up in arms & crying about Sedjati having the AUDACITY to be kicking in 142 races, remind me - what did it ultimately him? Check the Paris results and get back love.
Hoey is running fearless LIKE Wanyoni and Arop, taking the race by the balls from the gun. There is a big difference between "like" and actually doing it against those 2 guys outdoors come champs time...but he's making a strong case he'll be able to do it.
Sedjati got a medal, I thought Wanyonyi would win gold until the bitter end. Arop surprised me but you are discounting how good the top 5 were last year. Hoey being at Tuals level would be fantastic. Tual ran 1:42.3 or faster 4 times, and won European champs.
I'm interested in what Hoppel does. I think I read somewhere here a few days ago that Hoppel ran his AR without bicarb. If so, I think Hoppel could run the WR with bicarb.
The 800 was boring until the middle of last year, now it's the most exciting event. This summer is going to be lit AF.
Depends on whether they develop an AICAR test or whatever he is using. If they do then he will get a 4 year ban. If not than frankly sub 1:41 is in the cards.
I'm secretly hoping everyone says f-it and goes full blast so we can see Arop and Hoppel outkick Hoey for a 1:36, the whole field under 1:39
It's funny how people think Hoey is cheating, but not his competition.
We think Hoey, Sedjati and Tual are cheating. The other guys at least had fairly steady progression rather than dropping 3-5 seconds in the 800 just out of nowhere.

They must be incredible super-talents if they're beating cheaters.

To be fair it seems like those guys were only cheating for about a year. If Arop, Hoppel, Wanyonyi and others are able to beat them this year than odds are they are cheating as well.

Actually, those 3 also have pretty huge progression in the past 1 year especially Hoppel. I don't know why they are assumed to be "cleaner".
This time last year Hoey had a 1:47.2 PR and now it's probably too conservative to say that he's capable of breaking Hoppell's NR in Tokyo. Gotta love this sport.
Soloing 1:43.3 indoors means he's 1:42 low shape outdoors right now (maybe even 1:41 high in the perfect race)... it sounds insane but his ceiling's a new WR.
I don't know about that, and maybe that's why there's such a divide on how good he is
He's running on modern indoor tracks often taking the lead giving himself a cleaner race
There is less shoving and he doesn't have to worry about passing on the 50m straights, so he's not going to gain a .5-1 sec slow down from all the B.S. associated with indoor racing
