I've changed the title of the thread. Initially, it was started before the race and titled, "Cole Hocker racing(or pacing?) again at Virginia tech this weekend."
Can someone who was actually at the meet actually confirm who ran what on the DMR on Friday night? Did Teare beat Hocker or vice versa?
It's crazy that in the Internet era, that the Olympic men's 1500 champ can make his seasonal debut and no one actually bothers to even report what he did. It's a sad reflection of where our sport is.
It also confirms though what I say about most meets - you are watching practice so it's not a huge deal.
PS. And I totally get why some would say it's our job to report it. But it's a funny thing. It used to be that an outlet would cover a sporting event and they'd have an exclusive. So if you went to Va Tech and saw Hocker and Teare, you were the only ones on planet earth to have it. Not a 12year old with a cell phone can broadcast it to the Internet so it really kills the financial incentive to do original reporting as everyone assumes someone else will do it already. I just can't believe their agents or themselves or Va Tech or the timing site would actually have what he did 100% out there by now.

So it's a clearly a training weekend for Hocker - just seeing where he is at without putting any focus/effort into tapering - I actually think to run 2.50 and 2.18 right in the middle of winter first up is quite impressive and I don't think right now he could be expected to/actually could run much faster. And when you have been logging miles and are constantly tired, it's fun to take a few days off, lace up spikes and feel what it's like to run fast again. At a guess this now this kicks off probably 2 weeks of lighter work/a little more on pace stuff as he heads towards Millrose.
This is why all the talk of the world indoor mile record being obliterated in the next 3 weeks needs to be slightly tempered /given a reality check. Of course the guys will turn up in some sort of shape, but this is what a first up, off season "race" looks like for pros who are focussed on being in their best shape of the season 7 months later. It will interesting to see if Nuguse does something similar to this prior to NY - the last 2 seasons prior to running 3.47 there he's run a 3km and a 5km to get the rust off, I don't know what his plans are right now.

This is not a valid excuse for you not covering it.

Please. Who cares what Hocker and Teare do at a low-key college meet in Jan? LRC didn't cover Doris Lemngole's workout weekend at the Orange & Purple Invitational either. Same thing.

For most I'd agree, but Jakob seems good to go all year round, so I wouldn't be surprised if he breaks the mile record.

For the record I wouldn't be surprised if he did either. I have just seen some wild predictions of where this mile record might be by the end of Feb that I just don't think are realistic. So I think there is a great chance it's broken - not sure it gets blown apart by 2-3 seconds.
Teare was responsible for every PR Hocker had leaving Oregon. He led the grueling laps of every race, and Hocker started nipping him at the line. They are not worlds away from each other in any event; Teare has just been on the wrong side of a kick a few times. 12:54, 3:32 and we're saying he can't solo a 2:50? He has led the final 800 of a 3:50 mile multiple times.
You could rephrase and say 3:27 in the end of the season isn't in the same ballpark as 3:32 early. If Teare had the chance last year on a good day, I'd say he's with Hobbs Kessler on his best day in a 1500, and sitting high 12:40s in a peak.

How many Olympic medals - let alone titles - does Lemngole have?
How close would a 1000m be between Hoey and Hocker, actual shame that we'll never see that. I understand why Hocker would avoid it, I've come to realize runners avoiding losses is actually a net positive for them because they maintain their confidence. It keeps them in a constant good head space vs. a random loss could stick with a runner all year. Hocker keeping his confidence all the way to World Champs is important.
