Super excited to see what Tuohy can do, her 15:0x last year pointed to her getting back into shape. I think a lot of people have forgotten just how good she was at her peak in college, with her 3k record being worth ~14:45. I think at their peaks, she and Valby were just as good as each other at 5k (with Tuohy better at 1500 and Valby better at 10k), and it's a shame we didn't get to see them compete with each other in peak form.
If she's been healthy since her last race, I think she'll have a great race (maybe even a pb), and she'll have a good shot at the 5k team this year. Talent doesn't go away, and she's one of the most talented we've ever had. The end of indoors will mark 2 years since her peak, so if she's not at least close to that, I'll start getting worried about her, but since she was clearly rounding into good shape last time we saw her, I'm not worried yet. It must be a good sign that she and her coach feel confident enough to put her into Millrose.
I don't think Tuohy was equal to Valby at 5k at their respective collegiate peaks. At her peak, Tuohy lost to Annie Rodenfels at the BU meet by 7+ seconds; Rodenfels ran 15:08 to Tuohy's 15:15. At that same meet a year later, Valby beat Rodenfels by 7+ seconds. Valby ran 14:56 to Rodenfels' 15:03. Additionally, Tuohy's 15:03 PB came in a race where she got to run behind pros (she finished 7th in that race). Valby soloed a 14:52 twice, both times in NCAA championship races. It's more accurate to say Tuohy was better at 3k and below; Valby was better at 5k and up.
That said, I look forward to Tuohy's return and I hope she breaks all her PBs this year.
