This thread is written by the Alaskan Fishery department, it’s all about fishes and fishing for fish 🐠.
I don’t get why are people interested in this athlete. He is illegitimate in my book 📖! 15:22 for footlocker xc yet is outlasting and outrunning and out training Chris Derrick (14:57) and German Fernandez (15:07) into his late twenties and not slowing down at all!! How doped up is that?
Chris and German didn’t even win the footlocker race in 2007 and got trounced by A LOT by an even crazier Brazier-like talent in Michael Fout who coasted easily to a 14:50 win over then both. And what happened to him? His career was even shorter than both Chris and German’s. How is Fisher not dead at 26?
LRC is finding it harder and harder to justify this illegitimate athlete.😞
Are you trolling? The insiders know why Derrick and Fernandez didn't pan out. Rupp panned out because he is basically the opposite type of person as them.
Fisher was brought along slowly in high school. Didn't quit soccer until junior or senior year and still stayed pretty low on mileage and training. In college, Milt brought him along slowly, even when outsiders would criticize Milt for "not developing him."
It's also well-documented that Milt had to have "the talk" with Fisher about whether he wanted to be great at running or school. He was still running about 50-60 miles per week then.
Then he goes to Bowerman and gets his butt whooped for a year or two while he adjusted to "real" training. Now look at him. This is what an athlete looks like who had a long term plan, just like Rupp. Fernandez was expected to light the world on fire with his 3:55 freshman year. Derrick never really wanted to work all that hard for a long time. Fout? The dude chose to run for FSU or something, that should tell you all you need to know about him.

You are making things up that Derrick didn’t like to work hard. That’s a complete BS! Should I call up Derrick right now and ask him to defend himself on LRC? Derrick is a blue collar guy the hardest and most talented clean athlete you will ever meet! As for German he was the worlds most talented non East African who ever lived as he was even more haphazard in training in high school than Fisher also playing soccer and even basketball and mostly just a slouch. You could say German trained 1/3 as much as Fisher ever did in high school for running sport.
Fout? This dude was a beast like Brazier, dude opened a 7 second gap on Derrick the NXN champ on 15:42 on snow and mud and 17 second gap on German in the last 1 mile on 2 mind boggling hills on the balboa xc course!! German just ran 14;24 5k xc a few weeks earlier. Fout beat the heck out of these 2 already stellar talents? What was Fout’s training like? If you read the content of his interviews you get the vibe that he trained no harder and no more than Fisher in high school but yet runs more than 30 seconds faster on the balboa xc course? Is Fisher that untalented or what? Guess what a German had a tummy ache the day of his 15:07 race for 3rd and still trounced Fisher who only ran 15:22 while firing on all cylinders. Make no mistake had German been fit on race day he would have beaten the 14:36 course record solo!! He isn’t losing to some unknown dark horse like Fout!
well yes Fisher is untalented and that makes it all the more impossible that he should succeed any how under Jerry unless he used drugs.
Fout’s choice of school has nothing to do with his commitment to the sport. If he has gone to Yale or Harvard are you going to question if he really wants to succeed in the sport? School has nothing to do with it, the coaching staff excepted. 😏

Milt brought along Derrick just as slowly as with Fisher and could have won more titles and positions than Fisher had he not been running in the era of other great NCAA runners like McNeil, chelanga and king ches. His own Stanford teammates were also very good as him and competed with him for titles and positions.
Fisher’s era was much more emasculated and impotent in terms of star studded talent and power. His titles and positions carry much less convincing than those of Derrick’s.
Fisher is really not cut out for distance running except a chance encounter with one Jerry Schumacher who saved him from ignominy with the sauce!

I think these stats are impressive. Would have loved to have seen him in a fall/winter half but he'll probably debut @ NYC when he's in his 30s.
Fwiw a lot of elite distance runners have crazy low heart rates to begin with. Some pro triathletes really have to work hard to get their heart rates into the 120s/30s pushing really strong power on the bike & then 130s/140s around 6-flat on the run. You only see 150s on faster stuff, whereas I'll get up into the 160s/70s & someone younger will go a good bit higher. All I'm saying is it's impressive but it also tracks with someone at his level.
These types of stats of single runs are fairly meaningless without knowing max HR. Although I think we all know it's an indicator that he's quite fit right now. Which really raises the interesting question, why is he so fit right now? Anyone know if he was a race on the calendar coming up in the short term? And if he does, assuming it's an indoor 5k, 18 mile longs runs is a bit surprising. Granted that's only about 95 minutes, but still a long effort.

It's only shocking to hobby joggers trying to mightily to break 17 min 5K. For men, even 6 min pace for a marathon is very amateur level. People in running clubs might think it's fast but objectively it's not. Only distance running have people of limited or no talent putting in insane amounts of time training. I already realized this decades ago after racing div I guys in a race as a mediocre div 3 runner. Those guys were on whole different level. They even look different. It's not all about being skinny/scrawny. They're built differently.

Following your plan of running low mileage in HS will result in about 95% of kids not being good enough to walk onto a college team, unless they have very good genetics. About 99% won't be able to walk onto a D1 program.
Following your plan of 55 mpw in college, about 99% won't be good enough to be let onto their regional sponsored running team elite squad. So about 99.99% of HS kids following your plan won't ever run post collegiately for say the BAA elite team.
Your plan stinks.
Unless you have literally 1 in a million genetic talent like Fisher, your plan will results in 95% of high school kids wishing "If I had only run more I could have run in college" and almost all college runners saying "I wish I had trained harder in college so I could have been on the elite club team with my buddy running for XYZ sponsored club".
You need to come up with a much better ideal training path buddy.

You could make a similar statement about any pro sport. The abilities of pros are amazing compared to what amateurs can do. That's why we watch them! But that doesn't mean top amateurs aren't impressive compared to the masses. Someone running 6 min pace for a marathon is in the top 1%. That pace may not be fast compared to pros, but it's fast compared to 99% of runners. It's all relative.

German decided he was a vegetarian, and it cratered from there. Chris got caught in an injury cycle at bowerman, and never could break free of it. Had not a thing to do with him “not wanting to work hard.” That’s a complete fabrication. Fisher has had people on his side that wanted what is best for him for a really long time, abd is reaping the benefits of that not. Thankfully, he punched out of the dead end at BTC before it bit him.

How in the hell is that even possible? 10 years ago, I would have assumed that 18 miles at 5:22 pace was a killer workout. But he's just relaxing and enjoying the scenery. Grant Fisher is going to be a beast marathoner if he doesn't wait until he is 35.
Funny, that’s how I feel about your presence on this board.
Would you be shocked to know he’s a mod here? We have discussed it on our morning runs, and he enjoys playing different “characters”. Likely a way to distract himself from some type of stressor, subconsciously permit himself to be a different person, or just fight boredom. Perhaps a mixture of all 3…
