25-year-old Kate Axford switched from hockey to distance running last year because of injury, beginning with just 'going for runs' WITH NO PRIOR BACKGROUND IN RUNNING.
It is curious why he’d completely undercut his point and sound dumb by irrationally exaggerating/lying.
Obviously, the US system in particular strongly favors sprinters through 10k. There is a robust support system for people running these distances through the collegiate level and the US has been relatively successful. After college though or for marathoning overall the support is pretty weak. A US athlete winning a big second tier marathon might get $10k. Even doing that twice a year and you’re below minimum wage in a lot of states, and that’s not counting coaching, equipment etc costs.
So yeah, we probably lose most of our potential top runners to other sports or even regular below median income jobs because that’s still way better compensated than all but the top 10ish US marathoners.
