Martin(who I have been always a fan of) is not really even better than Langon from Nova who was two places back..same mile PR 4 secs faster at 3K and 2 at 5K. Langon who is 20 and 3 months is 3:56.24 7:43 and 13:28 all at 19 last winter and early Outdoor.
Langon is developing well!

I would like to see Murphy lower his arm carriage, but, it seems to work for him.
Idk, I had kind of the same thing. No one ever tried to fix it. It's just where my arms wanted to be, lol.
In 2028, there will likely be 3:29 and 3:30 guys who don't make the U.S. 1500m team. That's why guys like Murphy and Strand should be thinking about the 5000.
Here are the men's 5000m winning times at the last seven US Olympic Trials:
2000: 13:27
2004: 13:27
2008: 13:27
2012: 13:22
2016: 13:35
2021: 13:26
2024: 13:08
Those times are somewhat meaningless. If the top runners in those races had wanted to push the pace, they could have all been sub-13:10, and in recent years, sub-13.
I think you misunderstood my point. My point is that Olympic Trials 5Ks are usually sit and kick races, which (at least in theory) favors speedsters like Murphy, Strand, and Martin. Admittedly, it doesn't always work out that way in practice.

Murphy is a very nice runner. 9th here in his 5th year and 14th last year. Shows very nice range (a 1:47.8 best split) and is particularly good in races with moderate fractions; able to close down extremely well in races like this. Definitely a 3k/5k type where he is dangerous in the end. His arm carriage is not ideal (elbow angle is too small) but that is not a big issue. I can see him as a bit of an indoor specialist because of his small stature.
Marco Langon finishes 15th in his 3rd year at Nova. Sensational race. By comparison, Murphy was 92nd in his 3rd year.
I think Murphy is a future 5K runner with lift, he ran 13:23 and 7:42 early last year after XC, if he goes to BC again, in Dec. I think he runs under 13:15. He has relayed 1:46.7 , pretty good speed, if not great for a 5K runner.
Murphy and Langon, Jersey boys crushing it for Nova.
People don't want to say anything, but he ain't pretty. Nothing like Graham Blanks or Parker Wolfe, or any of those guys. Martin has lots of side-to-side motion and head jerking. He's not efficient.
I mean Nico Young not the prettiest form either. He’s fixed the head-bob a fair bit. Some hope for Gary in that regard. I think Gary was a bit up-and-down outdoors but he was more in the mix indoors than people might remember.

I agree about the comments about Gary Martin and his form in the last two kilometers of that NCAA race, yesterday, was pretty atrocious but I think part of it was due to the fact that he was really on the edge and absolutely extenuated meaning very very tired and that made his form even worse as he was rocking from side to side but on a good day Martin is so strong and could surprise many and I remember last year people were saying he could never place in an NCAA cross-country race but he proved them wrong.

Bit of a run-on, innit?
Yes. Also Ghost1 misused the word "extenuated."
Definition is "to lessen or appear to lessen the seriousness or extent of (an offense, for example), especially by providing partial excuses."

The mistake was a result of the word in French, my mother tongue language, very similar, meaning exhausted. This is what we call in foreign languages/linguistics a "false friend" i.e. something which sounds/reads similar, but has a different meaning.
The French word "extenué" translates to "worn out" or "exhausted" in English. It can also mean "haggard", which is an adjective that describes someone who looks very thin-faced and tired due to pain or worry. For example, "(je suis) exténué" translates to "(I am) worn out" or "(I am) exhausted".
Murphy and Strand have really impressed me since making that 1500 final at the trials. Maybe I just wasn't as aware of them as the Washington guys or other top NCAA milers but this is really a great showing of strength. Strand in particular impressed me and he has the added benefit of training with Parker Wolfe, so may find a sweet spot in that miler/5k balance to make him dangerous at a championship race.
