Their team is old. That is true. But marital status isn't really an indicator of that. Reminder that it's BYU. They all get married from 17-21 so they don't have to awkwardly ask friends to shake the bed anymore.
BYU once had a Kenyan back in the early 80's. He really didn't do anything of note. Was always "hurt" or "injured". I think he lasted about 18 months there. Never ran any fast times.
Also one in the early 2000s. Won pre Nats, got injured, left BYU, and finished up at TCU
Foreigner and Mormon are not mutually exclusive. There are several foreigners currently on the track and field teams who are also LDS. There have also been foreigners who were not LDS.
The mother of the #3 on the women's team today is from Ecuador. She was an XC All-American (14th) for BYU around 25 years ago. Her daughters who have dual citizenship rep Ecuador in international competition.
isnt she married in though? Lily will be joining Jane no doubt. so theyll have another Alder even as Carmen graduates. and they have a third sister coming up the ranks as well. same with Rohatinsky.
thats what fascinates me about BYU. its more than just cherry picking Mormon athletes around the country. its almost cultural there. if youve ever spent any time there you quickly realize distance running is a common activity for entire families in Provo and surroundings (and when you have 7 or 8 kids or more that makes a difference). lots of road racing and kids running clubs and because its not a gigantic city theres a level of elite athlete interaction you dont generally see in other locations. I recall hearing Jane Hedengren talking about how she would run into the likes of Conner Mantz and Clayton Young in random parks in Provo and they would hang out and talk, even run together a little bit. of course they knew her brother and her father but does that kind of thing happen in Flagstaff or Eugene? so its hardly surprising you see siblings and children and grandchildren of former athletes wanting to run for BYU too. and I dont think that happens with any other school to the extent it seems to there.
