Highschool in 2020, after track season was canceled from COVID. First time I ever had hard liquor. Had a few shots at some cute girls house and needed to drive home. Ran 5 miles to try sober up.
Never drunk but buzzed. Sometimes on a long run Sunday, I’d stop for lunch after 10-12 miles and have a few beers and run 4 miles back home at a slow pace. Raj to and from a few breweries once too. Never ran after more than 3-4 beers.
I never ran drunk but in 1990's in Louisiana there was a long distance group on a track team that routinely ran time trials at midnight after guzzling beer after beer. You had ONLY one minute to drink a 40oz, if you failed 7 secs was added to your 800m and 14 secs added to your mile. The fastest times were 1:52 and 4:07 two different athletes and they always finished the beer under a minute.
I partied a decent amount (too much) my first few years of college. really affected my academics and running. my "come to jesus" moment happened when one weekend I went really hard the night before our team's long run and woke up still super drunk. had slept over at some teammates house so we drove to practice together, I came out of my black out in the back of their car. when we got there I avoided my coach cause you could smell the whiskey coming off me still. got it in my head that I had to run the whole distance to hit my mileage for the week but felt just terrible the whole time and super out of it. that day was a big part of why I quit drinking. just realized I was prioritizing something that was obviously detrimental to my health and my goals. wound up getting blasted again the next weekend too, but from then on I've been a straight edge.
Yo dog, I've run modestly buzzed many times, particularly on work trips. My coworkers usually like to go out for a drink or two after work, and then I still have to run. This would be after 3 or 4 beers, and it's easily doable for me on an easy 5 to 7 mile run.
One time at an all-inclusive resort in Cancun, I attempted to run while crocked in the little gym they had. I started off by doing my stretches and warmup routine, and I kept falling over while trying to stand on one foot, etc. Somehow I got through that and started on the treadmill. I found myself getting out of breath and uncomfortably hot almost immediately, so I took off my shirt. It was early AM, but the cleaning crew kept coming in and out and I have no idea what they thought of the spectacle, but they didn't try to stop me. Ultimately, I only managed a mile or so before deciding to abort the effort.
No need to run drunk. Take a 10mg gummy instead - infinitely more enjoyable experience
As someone who did both I won't recommend either.
Running drunk sucks in a more obvious way – you're likely to puke, dehydration is strong even on a half hour run, headache afterwards is like 10x, and that is if you are not too disoriented and get back home (or to your destination) safely.
Running high though seems to suck the fun out of both running and getting high. I like running because I move around at a nice steady pace, not too fast however to notice things and enjoy the scenery (if there is something to enjoy) and it kind of fills you with joy. Running high perception of time changes and it's a slog, like when your coach prescribes you to run 20 miles not getting your HR above 120 (luckily he doesn't do that anymore). Just drags on forever. I like being high because it gets me equalized with the surroundings, I'm content – whatever I sit on, it's comfortable, all the food is delicious, all the jokes are hilarious, it's neither too hot nor too cold. When running high, it seems the other way around – like every possible discomfort is 10x. Sweating starts before you get out the door, any slight pressure in the stomach and you MUST poop under the bush, nah, seriously, that sucks big time.
ask literally any kid on a college xc/track team and i bet they have at least two or three traditions that combine running and drinking. bar crawl long runs, beer miles, etc..
Y'all should check out the Hash House Harriers! Also, there are a few wine marathons in Europe, full 42.2km with multiple stops at wine-making farms or stops sponsored by wineries. There's one in Martigny in Switzerland that I've done twice with a bunch of friends. About 12-15 stops with local wines, beers, or schnapps, plus local delicacies to eat. Great fun, and by the end, you are pretty drunk. The food really helps. The first time we did it, we finished in about 5:30, with a moving time of about 4:05. We realized we weren't spending enough time at the stops so this year we finished in 6:30ish, with a moving time of 4:17.
I went through a phase of drinking a large glass of whiskey to 'warm me up' and get me out running during dark, cold winter evenings.
It seemed to work. At that level of soft buzz when it's cold out it's actually quite a nice head space and doesn't impede performance too much. Probably best not to turn into a habit.
Wouldn't recommend on a hot sunny day though - dehydration, nausea, a racing heart rate and pale, clammy skin. Had to keep stopping for walk breaks on a 10 mile easy run, but I had quite a lot more to drink that time.
