The viewing angle is not ideal, but I think it was a last-second acceleration and lean that turned into stumble, rather than an attempt to block the passing runner.
The other guy was going so much faster, not sure the Purdue guy would have won even if he had been paying attention. Certainly a bad look though. Funny how it impacted two other teams advancing (per the LR article).
Guy’s an idiot for celebrating early but could we please do away with these ambiguous finish line setups? You’ve got three sets of mats, first one has an inconspicuous white pole next to it, second one has a gantry and results board over it, and the third one has what looks like a timing camera. WHERE THE F IS THE FINISH LINE?

Nothing ambiguous about it. Every other runner was fine. The first mat is always the finish.
The fact that you're looking at the time in a XC race tells your story. Besides, the course was a muddy mess. That course grinds you down to begin with but on that day it was wet, mud everywhere, and slow.
Don't know how it worked in this race but in many races the first mat is to give the names of the runners to the announcer, the 2nd mat is the actual finish line. A third mat is probably just a back up mat in case the 2nd mat fails.

I wholeheartedly agree with what you’re saying but don’t you think the officials explained that to the runners before the race?
Anyway, Zegarski earned the win. He was a stud for Little Miami in Ohio and he’s still a stud. Congrats on the win, Will
Douglas Buckeridge (Purdue) clearly tried to Impede and cut-off poor & honest William Zegarski (Butler) IMO. A blatant cheat move IMO. Should have been DQ'd IMO even if his deliberate impede wasn't successful. No way Douglas Buckeridge (Purdue) continued in a straight line.
Is this what Australians have become/resorted too? Seems like only a few years ago John Landy was helping other runners up who had fallen. Oh how times have changed.

Really? Pretty obvious. The first one, marked with orange cones.

Gota make sure the announcer gets the names .02 seconds before they cross the line

HAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAH WHOOOOOO. Sounds like you're holding a grudge and are a straight up hater of this athlete. Get over yourself...👀😆😂🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣💀 This 💩 post was hilarious.

This is not an actual thing. I have never seen or heard of this ever. I time races with chip timing and finish lynx just like in this video, and nobody I know does what you are saying.
The first mat is always the official finish line. The other mats are just a backup in case the first mat misses reading for some reason. But, the finish is always reviewed on the finish lynx cameras to make sure the chips actually read in the correct order. Close finishes sometimes have to be adjusted based on whose torso crossed the line first. You can also catch a runner whose chip doesn't read when you are going back through the finish lynx picture.
You can clearly see the two finish lynx cameras on the tripods at the front edge of the first mats and the white background pole on the other edge of the mats. There is also the identilynx video camera sitting at the back corner of the third set of mats. This full frame video camera is used to get a view of the bib numbers as runners finish and it is synced with the finish lynx side camera so that you can easily identify runners and verify every finish to make sure the order of the runners is correct.
