Lucas Bons, SR - 24 Joey Nokes, SR - 23 Davin Thompson, JR - 21 Creed Thompson, SR - 21 James Corrigan, SO - 22
Average age: 23.14
Since some people’s birthdays are earlier in the year and some are recent, let’s assume that everyone has 6 months until their next birthday meaning that the average age would be bumped up to 23.64.
It’s crazy that they’re 4-5 years older than the average of every other team, since that would mean every other team’s average age is 18.64-19.64 (this is sarcasm for you BYU haters that constantly fail to understand reason). My guess is that the average age of BYU’s top 7 is less than 2 years older than other top programs. And where did those 2 years come from? Oh maybe from the 2 years of mission service where they didn’t train.
5 of their top 7 will no longer have XC eligibility. This is their last year. Plus James Corrigan will probably go pro since he’s an Olympian. So just one returner for next year and something tells me that they’ll still be a podium team next year…
No one is cheating! BYU is just doing what is allowable, and Ed Eyestone is a great coach. The math is simple, 18-19 yrs old as a freshman+ 2- year mission+ 1 red shirt year= a 22–23-year-old freshman + 4 years of eligibility= 25-26-year-old senior. A lot of growth both physically and mentally occurs your early to middle 20's. I'm not saying it's wrong, but it's a clear advantage.

dont forgot the no training for two years during the mission. It is a disadvantage for the first year or two back and then possibly an advantage after that.

it's never a disadvantage. They have time to rebuild fitness. No one is going straight from mission to day one of XC.

And I believe the last of the "Covid Year" runners are seniors this season.

Apparently the math isn’t that simple if you think 2+1=4 year difference.
This is an important finding and should shut everyone up. Thank you.
3 of BYU's Top 7:
Casey Clinger, SR - 26 Aidan Troutner, SR - 25 Lucas Bons, SR - 24
Average Age= 25 years old
That is considered an advantage in my book.
No "Fancy" math needed, your "graduation" jargon doesn't work for this.
Sorry!
So if none of BYU’s runners had served missions, what would they be ranked this year? They’d still have James Corrigan, Davin and Creed Thompson, and Joey Nokes. You don’t think they’d have other people step up that currently aren’t in the top 7? Just to name one, what about 13:25 5k runner Danny Simmons that is on a mission right now?
I bet they’d still be ranked #1 if nobody had served missions.
BYU will always be good if their athletes serve missions or if they don’t. They get really good recruits, Eyestone is one of the top coaches in the NCAA, they train at altitude, they live their “honor code” which prohibits them from alcohol, drugs, smoking, etc, and they simply have a culture of excellence. But yeah keep crying about their 1.4 year age advantage.

People do go straight from the mission to school so your clock is ticking when you get back and are not in shape and need a year or so to get back in shape. It is a disadvantage the first while back for most.
