Cheptegei ran his qualification (a relatively easy 26:53) at Laredo road 10k (Kejelcha ran 26:37).
Villa de Laredo race in March. Good catch.
Where Cheptegei & Kejelcha were the only men to break 27 while Koko was the women's winner in 31:07.
So, maybe Laredo is a viable option to Valencia. Maybe -- if you live in Europe or northern Africa.
Any other 10k road races anywhere in the world fast enough for the absolute world's best to at least have a chance to break 27:00 or 30:20?
And, do 10k road race results qualify for WA ranking points?
The point of this exercise is to show that, despite the incredible performances we've seen on the roads primarily due to super shoes, those performances have mostly come in races 15k and above.
Despite 10k road races far outnumbering 10,000 track races worldwide, it's pretty much only the Valencia Icercaja 10k which stacks up against The TEN, possibly Hengelo or an occasional Prefontaine 10,000 as a road venue where Oly/WC Qs are attainable.
Still appears that The TEN remains the best option if you want to get to Tokyo next year on a 10,000 Q. Even if you miss, you'll still rack up major WA ranking points if you finish high enough and fast enough.
