Don’t know about hate, I just don’t know anyone who thinks about d2. Checked a map and Nevada, Arizona, Utah, Idaho, Montana, and Wyoming have a combined 3 d2 programs. The font was small on the Google image preview and though I could tell schools were listed there, I have no idea what schools they might be.
So there isn’t hate, just nobody I know even thinks about “d2” as an afterthought. It’s D1, then juco, then generically “somewhere else.”
D2 is the smallest of the three divisions so there can be scheduling issues. In the northeast you have D2 conferences made up of schools whose campuses are within a bus ride of each other. I ran in the Pa. Conference and were never more than a five hour bus ride from any other conference school's campus and usually not that long. The same holds true here in New England for the Northeast Conference, think that's what it's called.
But when you get to the part of the country you mention things are really spread out and D2 schools are few and far between. Northern Colorado moved from 2 to 1 not that long ago. The campus is near I-25 and I think there are more D1 schools located near I-25 than there are D2. Cal Davis was in D2 for a long time but finally moved to D1 because they were having trouble scheduling football games against D2 schools.
