1/2 marathon is his best distance as a runner, buttt....
He's good at Olympic distance tri. His engine is so big though that he can make waaaaaaay more $$ doing T100 and ironman than he can in running. #1 marathon finish at Kona for Ironman World Champs yesterday was 2:37. Moving to long course, he'll be able to close down everyone. Longevity for triathlon is also better than running. You can do more races each year and you can compete longer than as a marathoner.
Comparably, he's already also better at triathlon than running and has more potential there. It's a no-brainer if you want to maximize your potential, earn money, or be fulfilled professionally.
