This is unverified and not being reported by any legitimate news source, just some high schooler who makes those corny commitment edits, who dystat and runnerspace reposted. Until corroborated, I'm skeptical.
Face it, there aren't that any really good athletes across the board, and having room for 35 isn't that bad if the commitment to funding travel, etc., stays intact. I don't know too many D1 schools, even in the SEC, who have more than 35 great athletes on the roster. The less-talented folks who basically hang on for per diem and the thrill of being "big time" can find spots elsewhere at school's with great academics.

Americans need time to develop and freshmen rarely can contribute. It’s really all about junior and seniors at the national level. A 10 athlete roster really has to always have 7 upperclass athletes, or race ready internationals, to be remotely competitive. Similar math for track. Goodbye freshman recruiting.
Great development for Africa and Europe looking for podiums on the back of the American tax dollar; rough day for the top 5-15% of American high school athletes who used to get shots to compete in D1. Maybe no loss but the data geeks will list for you the Olympians who evolved out the of relatively nowhere. The message is you should have been a man who plays football or basketball. Rojo and wejo, fold up the tent - this college board as you know it is over.
This is such a dumb, shortsighted move for football. They’re going to add 20 more roster spots that they will fill with five star recruits, each demanding a large NIL deal to play for the school, and many of whom will transfer after one year because of lack of playing time. They’re destroying their running programs so they can throw more money at football guys who will take their limited NIL funds but never play a down for the school. There is only so much playing time in football as it is. Going from 30 to 50 guys on the roster who don’t even dress each week is not going to make their program better.
i personally love that the most succesful sport causes permanent brain damage

All true...but ADs only care about revenue. Running is an expense not bringing in any money.
NOT TRUE, When I was at Oklahoma State our Athletic Director at the Time Myron Roderick was in The Wrestling Room Several Times every Week, It was like he was An Extra Coach, He knew everyone on the Team, Walk ons, Transfers etc. If A Wrestler asked him to Watch a Move (Like shooting The Low Single) He would look for ways to improve what the Athlete was doing, He would even stay after practice for 20-30 Minutes analyzing The Technique, He Really put his Heart into it, (He was not there all the Time as His AD Job required him to do other thing) He was A Great Man and he Genuinely cared about Wrestling and that is a Non Revenue Sport most Years even at Oklahoma State, He was not focused only on Football and Basketball as proven by the Time and Effort he put into Wrestling.
Would spreading the top end talent out make championship team XC races more interesting? BYU, Arkansas, Ok St, NAU etc might find Furman, Iona and the likes starting to get closer in the mirror.
I ageee that D2 and D3 could get better quality and depth and suffer transfer blight but not that much. The hassle of initial expenses, transfer of credits etc just doesnt logistically add up. Inflation/recession is going to impact a lot of decisions made by athletes and programs.
XC will be ok. T&F as a team sport will suffer the most. Watch more programs narrow their areas of specialization to 2 and abandoned team balance even more. Florida doesnt need more throwers to continue winning team titles. They dont care about winning the SEC. Arkansas can have it.
As far as development goes...grass roots needs to step up. In reality, being on a D1 program is not an entitlement. There's still going to be sucky D1 programs but just fewer opportunities. Theyll still suck. The championship level will still look like a mini Olympics filled with foreign athletes getting developed by American tax dollars sprinkled with domestic talent.
Grass Roots!

I won't be waiting for ESPN to do a 30 for 30 on how Title IX hurts male athletes in non-revenue sports, especially walk-ons. Not a politically correct enough topic. I'm sure they won't touch this with a 10 foot pole, either.
The worst part of this to me is that the guys who needed a chance to develop, to do what college sports is arguably about, will never get a chance now.
