I thought the NAU woman were very underwhelming yesterday.
And same with Colin Sahlman.
Colin ran well for himself, he’s really more of a 1500/800 guy at this point. He split like 46 high/47 low in a 4x4 last year so a 23 minute 8k is good range with that in mind
Looked more tired than anything. Fading the second half of both the women’s and men’s races. The women didn’t run their top runners either. I’d expect both teams to place higher at nationals.
Some of you use every possible angle to beat down someone on your agenda. So, Parker Wolfe beats Nico Young and this is Mike Smith's fault? Once that gun goes off, it's on the athlete. The same guys will say Nico Young sucks because he lost. You seem somewhat ignorant of the whole process.

Most likely that the NAU woman are hurt. NAU tends to be injury 101. Especially the women. It’s very likely the top women are injured.
Basic philosophy run the sh/t out of his athletes and if you stay injury free you succeed. Not sure I would call this good coaching.

You have any verification of this? Baloga has been running every race this fall. It’s not possible that she’s being rested for the post season? Stearns has not run in almost a year. It’s not possible that she’s being eased into competitive form? Especially when Smith already said we should see her by conference or regionals??? Can you tell me which woman NAU runner is on the injured list? I actually don’t think anyone on their roster is.

I dont know if any are currently injured right now but arent there a few who are coming back from injury? Stearns obviously, Maisie Grice ran 2 races indoors then we never saw her again that spring and she is running much much slower this fall than she did last fall. Alyson Churchill is running slower than last year. I dont think Upshaw has run a track race for NAU in 2 years.

One was a broken foot non running related. Another athlete on the team was hit by a car and broke her leg. Other than that literally no one on the team is injured. But keep spewing your nonsense

Maybe. NAU program doesn’t seem like a typical meat grinder program to me though. This is pretty much said about every top program, sometimes true sometimes not. It is more likely than not you will go home disappointed come nationals though.

so they are just running worse than ever before for no reason?

So you don’t know just making things up? Upshaw literally ran track all the way to NCAA regionals last spring for NAU. Churchill ran unattached all spring and summer and actually made the Olympic trials but DNS although she was there. Runners have personal lives and just because their races and careers don’t go 100% according to plan doesn’t mean they are injured. Stop making sht up. NAU is one of the few programs that does things right and takes care of their athletes. One of the things Smith is famous for among his athletes is making sure the athletes are doing well personally. He is the opposite of running his athletes to the ground. He will red shirt athletes if they are not ready physically or mentally. Parents, athletes always say this about Smith. Just listen to some of the interviews from NAU athletes.

More importantly there’s no shame in losing to a guy like Parker Wolfe, he was clearly an Olympic level athlete last year, but didn’t have the standard.

Really bad race plan from Nico. It was a heck of an effort though.
Mike Smith still hasn’t been able to get Aaron Sahlman to the line. I’m assuming he’s hurt. If he is hurt it’s no surprise being at NAU.
Mike Smith is far overrated as a coach. He has the talent and still can’t get it done.
Agreed, seems like he was lucky with his top dog being so good in the past and doesn’t really do a good job with the entire team. He tends to screw up their peak almost every time. The 7000ft is a gift and get a huge advantage. If Smith was a sea level coach he would be average
I wouldn't worry about pre-nationals performance...it's not the "A" race.
Remember Jakob's quote...
"Many athletes want to pull the carrot out of the ground early to see what they have made, but in reality, once you test it, you can never put it back in,"
I said I wouldn't doubt Mike Smith again after his team won 2022 nats on the tiebreaker after underperforming all season. I don't think another title is in the cards this year (at least for the guys), but a shot at the podium would be plenty impressive imo.
