D2 gets no more scholarships than D1. Most of these guys are getting small scholarships. And why would foreigners be faster than Americans? People see 30 foreigners and claim that the team automatically has to he better. And for those who don't care about D2, this team is top amongst all schools.
good luck with life then. I dont think most NC kids would even have Wingate in their top 15 schools to attend just within NC. There's a reason they have to get internationals, most americans know to avoid crap schools like wingate.

It's actually a very innovative approach. No other school in NCAA history has managed to create this system. Historically speaking, most NCAA schools that focus on foriegners are limited in the number they can recruit. Since foreign athletes can be very hit or miss, those teams tend to be very inconsistent over the years. Wingate avoids this problem with their absolutely massive roster size and seemingly unlimited scholarship cap.

Because taking a student loan for $40k a year to go to any school is stupid unless you are planning to go into a career that you can afford to pay it off like law, finance, consulting etc. Paying $10k a year to go to a public crap school is also stupid, just less debilitating for your future. But id guess most people are just blowing through mom and dad's money at Wingate and dont care.

I think you completely missed the initial point that I made—not sure if you did that intentionally to fit your narrative, or if you’re just oblivious. The characterization that they “…roll the dice on 25 guys and get enough success stories to field 5-7 competitive runners” does not at all match what happened this weekend. They had 7 in the top 20 of the open race. They had 5 in the top 11 and 7 in the top 45 of the gold race. It’s not a small number of individuals that blew me away; it was their incredible depth.

I’d say that jumping to criticize a team because it has foreign talent before even making an acknowledgement of how impressive the team performance was, is pretty xenophobic. What’s your definition of the term?

You've done absolutely no research on the team, then. They were dubbed "one of the deepest teams in D2 XC history" by The Stride Report, which would mean they're really good at rolling dice. In 2024 outdoors they swept the steeple at NCAAs, 6 guys under 14 in 5,000, 8 guys under 30 in the 10k, 5 guys under 9 in the steeple. Look at the stats of those guy on World Athletics or TFRRS. They've improved steadily across the board. Sorry to burst your bubble, but a small school producing those results is impressive.

I know a runner who graduated from Wingate recently. She reportedly had a great experience running there, and her Wingate degree got her into a prestigious PhD program at a major research university. I haven't heard anything negative in fact.

Truth is good grades, high test scores, name on research and strong faculty recco can overcome almost any bad undergrad school.

Thanks! I learned to do it at my dogwater school. Seriously, people complain here sometimes that cross country is not a sport taken seriously at a lot of schools. Then when a school does take it seriously you see complaints about the athletes the schools are using to do it.

to be fair to Wingate they have to employ the foreign athlete strategy because they can't convince talented americans to spend 4 years there. The americans know better.

The USA made a decision after world war 2 to be the superpower and protector of the free world. A small part of that is opening up our universities system to all.
Foreign grads generally pay full fare. Many stay and become well educated high achievers. Those that go home become part of their home country leadership with fond memories of US, understanding of a free country, and fluent English.

Schools have other sources of aid than athletic scholarships. Bowerman used to find summer jobs, usually in lumber mills. They also can find other kinds of grants. I have a friend from New Zealand who went to a D3 school in Arkansas. They didn't give athletic scholarships but he got a full ride because they had some scholarships earmarked for foreign students. If a school really wants you they'll usually find a way for you to afford it.
