It's embarrassing!!!!!!!!!!!!! I couldn't believe it when the report stated he took 3-4 walking breaks to finish in 63???????????????????? Like seriously????????????

In hindsight it was ludicrous to think JI would break the HM WR under these circumstances. There’s are reason why records are records… they are extremely hard to break. JI flaming out the way he did only proves he’s human, which makes his three WRs all that more impressive.

And of course all these comparisons are asinine considering an opening 10k of under 27:30. First of all, his first 10k alone is equivalent to something under 61 minutes for a half marathon. Second of all, none of the first 1:02:xx runners you mention could even come close to opening a half marathon in 27:30.

If I had to guess, I would imagine Jakob could have managed just under 60 minutes today with an even pace. Probably more like 59 flat if he had a few weeks to devote to focusing on the race rather than running it 36 hours after a 1500.

It is a dream, I was filled with joy when I saw Jakob's failure at the half marathon, and I look forward to Jakob's next embarrassment and failure of a race, I'm sure I won't have to wait very long.

Guys, this race does not show that Jakob's best distance is 3k/5k or 5k/10k. It's entirely possible that he's right that he's physiologically best suited for the HM. But he doesn't *train* for the HM! He's been training mainly for the 1500 and for nothing longer than 5000. So it should have been totally obvious, as many other people are now saying, that he'd bonk pretty soon after going with the leaders at world record HM pace. I think it's pretty impressive that he made it 10k, honestly. But it doesn't show anything at all about what his best distance is because we don't know what kind of HM time he'd run if he actually did HM training like people normally do before their debut. Why on earth he thought doing this race was a good idea, I of course don't know.

What do you mean “If Jakob trains like a 10k guy?” Everyone on these boards always says Jakob trains like a 10k/HM guy, he could break the world record in the 5 and the 10, the HM is his best event, and a whole lot more.

So does he or does he not train like a 10k guy? It seems real dumb to say all season long he trains like a 10k/HM guy and then when he runs a bad half we start to say “If only he trained like a 10k guy he could break the 10k and HM world record.”

I recall when he was teenager Jakob did some strange race where he ran up a mountain. The reason I bring it up is because it shows that he’s open to try new things that are not in his wheel house. For a guy focused on the 1500 to jump in a world class half makes little sense. But like the mountain race it was a unique challenge. We need to give him credit for being so bold. Especially in an age where many guys only go after perfect set stages for them. Jakob has a refreshingly unique bold mindset that really makes the sport more interesting.

The announcer said towards the beginning of today's race that Jakob never runs further than 20k in training. He may have said that Jakob has never run further than 20k at all. That is certainly not training like a HM guy or a 10k/HM guy. He may do shorter versions of the types of workouts that 10k/HM guys do, but not the volume in individual workouts. And there would be no reason for him to do that, since he hasn't trained for a race longer than 5k in years.

Yes indeed this LRC board has gone insane with so many mentally irrational and unsound folks who can't reason and persuade from a proper anchor point!!!!!!!!!!!!! First they say Jakob trains like a 10k/HM guy and should run a very good HM but after the fact of Jakob's implosion changed their story to say Jakob should have trained like a 10k/HM guy because he previously didn't do so!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What kind of logic is that folks????? This board is embarrassing. I clearly remembered 'Thoughtsleader' among others who was selling Jakob as a 10k/HM guy and training like one, and many other LRC folks too!!!!!!!

I would love to see someone break all the world records (from 800 up to mar) bit I don't think Jakob is the one to do it. Maybe a younger talent who could start with the shorter distances and build his way up.

I'm not sure a lot of the people commenting on this thread actually watched the race! I watched it, and while it was 'only' a 63 minute race for the full distance, it was the way it was run that was critical. He got to nearly half way on a sub 58 pace (and not even ak even pace, the second 5k has sped up significantly). At this point he stopped completely, caught his breath for a few moments, before jogging. He then waited for the next group to pass and then tried to tag on to them, but needed a bit more rest, so walked for a bit longer. Had he actually wanted to maximise his time, he could no doubt have run evenly and run a 59:30 or something. The fact that he could carry on going in the second half in a semi reasonable pace (given that a few mins will have been walking) means he won't have been all out for that first 10k. Also think about the context (ignoring the 1500, which physiologically won't have taken much out of bim...perhaps mentally so though given the concentration required and extra travel) that he is racing off his summer training (and tail end of that too) and not his winter base AND that he lost many months of his winter base, and this run was remarkable. I would say he can absolutely beat the GM WR when he trains specifically, assuming that the has the motivation to do so.
