I already somewhat implied this in my earlier thread. He made his event look bad. It’s not a joke. He has some odd build to be good at the hurdles and he’s also a lot weaker now (like 46.9 shape vs 45.9). He chose to run this at the wrong time with no warmup. He needed to run 10.2. He had an image to show and he failed. I wish they just chose 150 so he wouldn’t have looked so dumb
I don't think you can truly have that pop out of the blocks when you've been training to optimize your 400/400h all year. There's a lot of talk about Benjamin and his flat sprint PRs, but if he had shown up there with Warholm and Duplantis, not only do I think his 10.03 might have only translated to a mid 10.2 with wind changes and such, but more than likely he would have been even slower after dedicated peaking, and taking down his rival, for his first gold at the 400 hurdles. Maybe he still beats Duplantis, but no way he touches 10.03 there, and it may have ended up closer that you guys would be willing to accept.
Maybe Rai beats Mondo?! Are you out of your mind. Rai would have destroyed Mondo.

I say MAYBE, because 10.37 really is pretty solid. That 10.03 is probably worth more like 10.10 in basic, plus add in some extra hundredths or a tenth because that meet was VERY suspect (it was a weird Coronavirus meet in Texas and Norman ran 9.86 in the same race which he's never remotely touched again).
Now you're sitting at 10.15/10.20 for a more realistic Benjamin baseline. NOW add in that he was primed for the 400 HURDLES post Olympics, just like Warholm, not a 100m dash. Maybe he can only pull off a 10.25/10.30 in that Duplantis/Warholm race. That's probably still a fairly comfortable win for him, but if he's off his game at all beyond that, the next thing you know he's around 10.35 and in Mondo's territory. To be clear, though, there's no scenario where Warholm can compete with Benjamin over 100 (barring injury or a trip or something)
The point being, Mondo and Warholm performed quite well. People don't run their 100 PRs everytime the run one and that 10.03 is pretty sus. Benjamin IS legit, but only in that he's a legit 10.10 guy and one of, if not THE, best 400h guy of all time. And for all the junk people are talking about 10.47, I don't think they have the right context for it. Hence my contexts.
If you gave all three guys a chance to train for a month or two for a full go 100, Benjamin is the clear winner. He runs 10.05/10.10 in basic. Mondo probably peaks out at 10.25/10.30, and Warholm 10.30/10.35. in that scenario it isn't even close for Benjamin because the race prep is more fair for him. And in that scenario I see Warholm get closer to Mondo, to boot, though it looks to me that Mondo would be the typical victor between those two at this point.
LRC posters still butt hurt that Sydney is the best flat 400m runner in the world but chooses to run the hurdles. The 400m hurdles is a more marque event than the open 400.
Maybe you missed the men's 4x400 in Paris, where Benjamin delivered a phenomenal anchor leg and held off a hard-charging Tebogo in the home straight. Benjamin ran 43.13, the fastest split of the gold-medal winning relay, which, btw, was the second-fastest 4x400 ever run. Benjamin actually *disproved* the OP's point. The 400m hurdles are no joke.
this is the dumbest argument. rai benjamin has a 10.03 100m. sydney has gone 11.07. 3 of the US team members on the relays that took gold were hurdlers.
you appear to be struggling more with the fact that some 400m types are fred kerleys and others groove a pace that while meh for any given segment adds up quick.
arguably, yes. Everything in track and field is "fake", arbitrary distances, arbitrary times, arbitrary competition, arbitrary meaning, arbitrary reality.
then you get to the athletes. Arbitrary personalities. Arbitrary goals. Arbitrary meaning.
These arbitrary plastic people, as their arbitrary careers, their arbitrary abilities, begin to wane,
turn to arbitrary drinking, to fill the arbitrary holes in their souls
first off, in dissing the 100 effort of a 400 guy, you neglect the idea of a 400 "groover." i learned at the feet of an upperclassman 400 guy who made state for our HS. that dude never blazed any part of the race and wasn't running 10 flat 100 but did 46 or 47 quarters in HS. which if you break it down is really like 11.5-11.75. the question is holding that.
second, you're ignoring some people are versatile kerleys/decathletes and some aren't. christian coleman once upon a time did 300H and ran a HS varsity type 40.77. so you're implying the sprinters are better for running sub 10 but then neglecting if they tried to do his race, they might look worse than a good HS kid.
put differently, you didn't consider if mondo can scale up to 400 much less hurdles.
He’s capable of much faster. Just wasn’t in the form for it this time. Gotta imagine 400m hurdle training takes it out of your legs more than pole vault training.
Not everyone can hurdle well. If it was easy why did Bolt or van Niekerk never go for it in the 110m and 400mh respectively? Even once? Because they would never have been as good as they were in their own event and they knew it. Would it be a joke if the matchup was over the flat 400? Warholm has run 44 for the flat 400 sub 46 for the 400 hurdles. How many people can do that without hurdles? How many 100m or 800 specialists can do that? Michael Johnson never broke 10 and his times for 200-400 are beyond most who did break 10. SML can be competitive in every sprinting event yet Bol who can't still did a sub 51 for the hurdles, something 99.99999% of 100-400m flat specialists cannot match even if they trained.

You might want to check Rai Benjamin’s flat sprint PRs.
....
Exactly...OP try again. Warholm ran 400 (45.9*) hurdles in a time that's respectable for a world class flat 400m. That's amazing talent even though I'm definitely not a fan of Warholm.
we're also ignoring that for jumpers and vaulters a short sprint capability is desirable and linked to success. 100/LJ used to be a routine double. even the gawky looking tentoglou has a 10.7 100m time.
