These guys are so fit and efficient that the real benefit of "the shoes" is having zero impact on them performance - or you think any extra 4mm of softer foam is generating some kind of extra force that is increasing running speed by fractions of a percent?
The spikes might matter in training - reducing cumulative fatigue over the course of a season from faster track work. Maybe that was in play at this stage of the season? Either way the real reason he obliterated this record was the LED's - he still smashes the record if Komen had the same access to them - but maybe by a second and not three.
